Born in Portsmouth, Virginia Donte “Dollarman†Peeples took an early fascination with music courtesy of his mother. With no father to help with the major responsibilities that coincide with being a teen-age parent, his mother began working two jobs to make ends meet.Realizing that a twelve year-old boy living in the Washington Park housing projects of Portsmouth is likely to get into much trouble, Donte’s mother bought him a keyboard to occupy his time and keep him off of the street while she was away at work. With no formal music training, he became quite skilled with the instrument. After only a short while he began playing chords from many hit singles that were on the radio at the time, by ear.Inspired by older aspiring lyricists in the neighborhood, who often gathered in freestyle sessions on the street corner just beyond his mother’s front yard, he began writing at the age of 14.By the time he was 16, his gift had come full circle and he began producing his own music and writing songs to the music he had created. Soon he began recording material on cassette tapes, and transferring his thoughts into a potentially profitable product. He went on through high school self releasing 3 mixtapes which helped solidify his reputation amongst his peers as an urban musical prodigy. These mixtapes helped him catch the attention of many underground hip hop enthusiasts, including a journalist from the local newspaper, The Virginian Pilot, who wrote an article featuring an interview with D.pee entitled “Home Grown Rappersâ€, in the local entertainment section of the paper. He used the publicity as fuel for his mixtape sales as well as beat sales. He was quickly establishing his place in the Virginia underground music scene and also making money producing tracks for local aspiring artists. His style has been described as a mixture of northern lyricism with a strong influence of southern production.
