With the massive popularity of the 8th hit album, "Oh Yuki, How You Slap Me"
Kathu found themselves at a crossroads.
Fueled by in-band feuds and Thu's addiction to heroin, Kathu launched what would become their first farewell tour. On the bill with Donna Summer, Devo, and a re-re-reuinted Fleetwood Mac, Kathu went out in a burst of flames. Literally. Kat's alcohol addiction made her highly flammable and during a sold out show in Detroit, she mysteriously combusted and spent three months in a Danish hospital. Stevie Nicks recalls the tragic scene - "I had just joined them onstage for an encore of 'Maura, Oh Maura', and Kat just exploded. It was really scary, scarier than Mick Jagger trying to make out with me in 74. It was also frightening becuase I was worried that my layers and layers of witch scarves might also ignite." When Behind the Music continues, Kathu make their 8th and biggest comeback...
Kathu found early on that many of the key players in the industry were out to make a profit off of them. Everyone from Phil Spector to Aretha Franklin demanded a birthday song from the talented duo. The strain from this constant pressure is what drove Kat to her first homicidal incident. With her earlier arrest for the attempted electrocution of Michael Stipe, Kat served the City of Los Angeles in community service, making meals for the Hollywood Retirement Home. The music industry seemed to disown them for several years, denying them entry into the Grammy Awards, prompting Thu to crash the show, falling through a skylight onto the laps of Madonna and Stevie Wonder. During this dark time, Kathu coined what would become their motto: “Kathu doesn’t give you what you want, Kathu gives you what you need.†This created a definite understanding between the band and the industry trade magazines to stop demanding birthday songs and to appreciate that Kathu had much broader talents.
