About Me

INFO ON UPCOMING SHOWS!
THE SHONDES will be in Olympia this DECEMBER and playing at LE VOYER!
They are in our top friends this month too, so don't forget to add them, check them out, listen to the music and show up to the show!! Here's a blurp about them from the myspace site...
"The Shondes are known for their complex, melodic rock sound combined with soaring, rich vocals, and a live show that explodes with energy. Their instrumentation fuses the various musical traditions of Classical, Jewish, Queercore, and Feminist Punk, while their vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting, textured by the distinct qualities of each of their voices. The high energy of their live shows bring audiences along for the ride, and audience members are swept into the world of the show, often singing along, dancing, and swaying to the heavy rhythms and soaring melodies."
Sounds AMAZING!!!Welcome to
Grrrls Rock Olympia!

Our mission as a not for profit project is to empower girls & women through music, expressive arts, community building, media literacy and collaborated effort focused on local and international social justice & change.
Our goal is to promote moving through tolerance into understanding and acceptance through workshops and activities based on complex trauma prevention. We are focused on addressing such issues as gender, sexual orientation, race, oppression, poverty, violence motivated crime, abuse & recovery.
We also promote musicians who fall under a catagory other that white male. That means that if we send you a note about a show to go to, it will be independent, political, relivant and worth your time!!
The GRRRLS ROCK Herstory:
summer 2005
GRRRLS ROCK is born on the porch of Hava's house. Within weeks she involves fellow Evergreen State College student Mindy Bergen, and they begin to develop the idea into a independent learning contract. These two hair-raising riot grrrl single mamas intended to engage the female youth of the Pacific Northwest through live music powered by female musicians.
fall 2005
Grrrls Rock The Northwest Tour 2005included musicians Gina Young, Nedra Johnson, Scream Club, Annie Bethancourt, Spider & Arjuna Greist. In three cars packed with women, children, organic locally grown food, sound equipment and guitars 1-5 was stamped out from Eugene, Oregon up to Vancouver, BC, Canada. They hit eight cities total and threw 10 shows. In Olympia, a special three day fest included all the traveling musicians as well as local bands from LA, Seattle, Olympia and Portland.
spring 2006
Girls Talk, a series of workshops with teenage girls that explored politics, environmental issues, youth issues and other important topics through expressive arts workshops and seminars met for six weeks, twice a week.
Through creative involvement with each girl we will encouraged her to continue her self-discovery, to build interpersonal communication skills and to gain political awareness. We urge girls to become an active member within her community.
summer 2006
GRRRLS ROCK is morphing into The Grrrls Rock Project. Hava is getting ready to graduate from The Evergreen State College and Mindy is grabbing some extra learning while she can! Hava is planning on developing The Grrrls Rock Project into a 501(c)3 non-profit agency through her Graduate Studies in Whole System Design with Antioch, Seattle. Mindy is moving onto Urban Planning. Keep your eyes open for some progressive feminist action coming your way!!
The GRRRLS ROCK Fundraiser Series:
Through the spring and summer of 2006 we threw a load of shows in basements, living rooms, all age venues (when they exsisted in Olympia) in order to continue promoting women in music and fund the grrrls talk series.Summer 2007
The GRP got some other amazing folk together and jumped onto the exsisting youth multi media fest in Olympia, the WHAT YOU GOT?! fest. In five venues for four days there were workshops, film, live music and all sorts of fun! Hava is still on the organizing committee and we're always looking for youth identified folk to help out for next summer! The GRRRLS ROCK Present:
fall 2007

Well, Hava is running the show and going to graduate school full time. For the most part, there is the WYG fest to organize and shows to promote. That's about all she can handle for now!The GRRRLS ROCK Future (Ideas & Such):
music
The Grrrls Rock Project will let out a compellation CD for public release of all female & other minority musicians.
space
The Venue will be opening Olympia (with plans to extend nationwide) where traveling queer/female/trans performing artists, musicians, singer/songwriters, poets, writers, DIY activists and youth activists have a place to play to an all ages drug free audience. There is talk of forming a collective here in Olympia where the GRP building would be part of a collaborated effort towards breaking some barriers in Olympia. There is talk about a coffee shop & two hostels. The combined effort would enable direct service to homeless youth, survivors, low-income mothers and more through creating a work force collective.
The building will also be used as an alternative to mainstream media, education and access to information for the youth in the community. There will be MANY creative workshops offered at the center.
The local youth will be able to learn how to play musical instruments, run sound, mix and record their music. They will have access to camera's and camcorders for independent photography and film projects, and there will be a digital editing studio for these projects. There will also be a visual arts section where teens can paint, draw, silkscreen, Rizzo screen, make zines, flyers, sculptures and other forms of visual media. There will be workshops and groups for girls and women, pregnant teens, gay/straight/trans and questioning youth and more.
If you are running anything similar please get in touch with us and we can network together to further progressive action, media literacy, anti-oppression and community involvement!
tour
We The People Tour is a multi faceted festival on the road. We will go into the communities and draw the public in with film, live music and performance. The objective is focused on anti-oppression work, sustainability, media literacy & community building. There will be workshops that come with the performances that include zine making, silk screening, event planning and organizing for all individual communities.
With the help of numerous organizations, queer/female/trans performing artists, musicians, singer/songwriters, poets, writers, DIY activists, youth activists and a full staff from across the nation the tour will hit 48 states and blow away some minds!
