If I had something cool to say, this is where I'd put it.

About Me

I write books for teens mostly, but I'm currently working on a mom lit story that's more autobiographical than I probably want to admit.
I'm a former UM youth ministry director and I also worked for the YMCA for most of my life. While most people run from large crowds of kids, I thrive in the middle of them. I love kids of all ages, but God placed the teen years as a special tug on my heart.
I don't call myself a CHRISTIAN author-- I just happen to write about kids who know who Jesus is and what He did for them. That doesn't mean my characters know all the answers or get it all right. Hey, we real people seldom get half of it right-- we don't want to read about phony people who always know the right thing to say, have a Bible whose pages always fall open to the right passage, and lead perfect lives. You aren't going to find that in my books.
What you will find, hopefully, is real people like you and I. They screw up. They do the wrong stuff sometimes, and they don't always make the choices they should. But they love God, and they're striving to live like Jesus each and every day no matter how far short they fall. You won't find a neat, little tied up ending to my stories. Life isn't always "happily ever after" in my world, but I hope you'll be entertained and see a bit of what its like to be a teen in today's fishbowl where the world is so quick to point fingers and yell "hypocrite!"
Thanks for stopping by.
Thirteen years ago, I met this awesome guy whom I knew from day one was going to make some chick pretty happy. I never thought it would be me! We've been married eleven years now, and I still think he's pretty cool when he wants to be-- even if he hates to get his picture taken. :-)
We served as foster parents for four years (hence, the inspiration for the mom lit book...) For the most part, I wouldn't change a moment of that walk in my life. God used us to help heal quite a few families that way, and He brought us our children in the meantime. Who would have guessed I'd be the mom of five kids-- and a Jackie-- forever now.
As you might guess, adoption is a pretty big deal to me. I'm always available to talk about the process and the need around the world for loving Christian homes for kids who need them.

My Interests

Well, I'm a product of the 80's-- a thorough pop culture junkie. I have more useless trivia in my head than I probably have real knowledge. Sometimes, I start singing songs that most people never even knew existed. Ah, if only I would have studied more in school instead of memorizing Wham! videos...

I'd like to meet:

Susan Cooper... It's because of her Dark is Rising sequence that I became obsessed with telling a really good story.

Music:

contemporary Christian-- leaning towards the rock and hip-hop side, but I love any good music.

Some of my faves include-- but so not limited to-- Evanescence, Hawk Nelson, Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds to Mars, mewithoutyou, Gym Class Heroes, Kids in the Way, Paul Wright, GRITS, KJ-52, Family Force 5, Superchic[k], Barlowgirls, hellogoodbye, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, and a bunch of others.Yeah, and then, there will always be these guys...

Television:

I'm a reality show junkie, but only the good reality shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race, and American Idol. Plus, you can't forget Mythbusters, Pimp my Ride, and Ghost Hunters. You know, quality television.

Books:

If you peruse my Friends' list, you'll "meet" many of my favorite authors.
There's no possible way to list all my favorite books. I have too many.
Of course, I love YA books. Books like Gingerbread by Rachel Cohen and The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler remind me why our genre is so important.
There's a lot of heat on our genre today-- some of it rightly so. But I don't believe in censorship. I believe in parental involvement in reading. I believe in dialogue between kids and parents about the subject matters dealt with in some books-- because if you are an adult who doesn't believe your kids aren't having to deal in one shape or form with these things, then you're either locking your kids in the closet or in total denial. I believe in my fellow authors and their passion for the life lessons they want to pass on in their works. I may not agree with all of their approaches, but mostly I believe that teens are mature enough to "learn" something from a story without the benefit of the main character learning it as well. Some of the most challenged books happen to be some of my favorites-- and some of the most challenged authors of our day happen to be people very close to my heart.
