About Me

Singer, songwriter, and producer, Angel Burgess, has spent the last few years crafting a unique brand of music designed to challenge the mind and speak to hearts of man. It has become clearly evident that she has been given a direct order to defy the status quo and resist the pressure to yield to popular opinion. Point blank—lives are at stake. It is through her music and message that she will embark on a mission to break the chains of spiritual oppression and mobilize a movement of liberty.
Having spent four years as an inner city high school English teacher, Angel has worked in the front line trenches combating the issues that plague an ever increasing God-less society. Ever persistent in her quest to quell the destructive works, images, and messages that today's society has bombarded on the mind, she has developed a "without walls" approach to her music designed to reach far beyond the church house and into the nations. "When I begin to place limits on my music, I begin to place limits on God. He's not confined to boundaries, so why should I be. This music is for the world."
To carry out her task, Angel not only deploys unbending faith, but also a fusion of gripping, thought provoking lyrics and wordplay, versatile musicianship, and a rich, convicting vocal range that resonates deep within the core of the soul. Her music is set to stand the test of time as she is poised to make a permanent imprint on around the world.
Angel’s journey began in Northern California's Bay Area. At a young age, she was introduced to some of the West Coast’s most venerable gospel pioneers, such as Walter Hawkins and Tramaine Hawkins, Andre Crouch, and later Ron Kenoly, Sr. As the music of these gospel giants became deeply rooted in Angel, she began to bear fruit at an early age by singing solos in church at age 2 years old. The hymns, quartet melodies, and soulful grooves planted a seed that is manifest in much of her music today. Later, that love transcended into a mature appreciation and fond affinity for soul, jazz, R&B, and classic standards with which a very musical family flooded their home.
While participating in high school theatre and talent shows, Angel’s mature voice and magnetic stage presence caught the attention of several notable record producers and labels. Eventually, she gained the attention of world renowned entertainer extraordinaire, MC Hammer and immediately began to hit the road touring as a backup singer and feature vocalist. Appearing on two top ten singles, “Goin Up Yonder”, and “Keep On”, Angel performed on a variety of nationally televised shows as well as music videos including Soul Train, The Arsenio Hall Show, and BET’s “Video Soul”, Trinity Broadcasting Network, and The Stellar Awards.
She has shared the stage with artists such as Charlie Wilson, Yolanda Adams, Montell Jordan, Darryl Coley, and a host of others. Traveling the world at a young age gave her first hand lessons on the grind of the music business, but also prepared her for her call to minister to the nations. She performed concert dates in Japan, Korea, Barbados, and later toured in India to help aid earthquake victims. She--s performed at numerous stateside concerts, events, music videos, television shows, recordings, tours, and also church praise and worship. God soon challenged Angel by telling her to move across the country to Chicago, Illinois. With no immediate family or friends, Angel was put in a position to truly rely on God and her faith to bring her through. In time, she began to build a following while performing on the local spoken word, theatre, and musicals circuits. Many began to be introduced to her innovative brand of music, where they were treated to a soulful stimulation of the spirit and often serenaded to salvation.
In Chicago, she further refined her repertoire and stage presence enthralling audiences in performances at The Black Ensemble Theatre, Gentlemen of Leisure performing band, The Odyssey Chicago Boat Tours as well as self producing several musicals and plays.
Fast forward to 2007 and you find Angel Burgess preparing to launch one of the most creative, innovative, spirit-led, musically rich albums to date. She can boast not out of her own desire, but the standard of excellence that God has called her to embody.
Assembling some of Chicago--s finest musicians and vocalists to bring her sound to life with live instrumentation, Angel will deliver an eagerly awaited composition of epic proportions. Her versatility is evident in much of the production as the music will take you back and forward simultaneously--from traditional and contemporary to her unique signature sound. At her creative peak, Angel employs a working knowledge for a wealth of musical genres. Gospel is her message of truth, however musically she creates from a pallet of traditional, alternative, rock, jazz, Latin, soul, standards, world music, and more to create a colorful mosaic of sound, substance, and style four the senses, spirit, and soul. To be used a vessel of God's supernatural gifting she relishes the call to lead all people into worship, not only in an isolated experience, but into a lifestyle. Angel is extremely excited about her debut project that will be released independently in 2009 by LifeSong Music Group.
