It isnt just his dark chocolate, unusually regal birthmark that sets him apart from the rest...its his warm tenor.Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Lawson, the oldest of three, began singing before he could speak, a gift he inherited from his beloved great-grandmother, Earlene.
In high school, Lawsons love of music deepened and he landed a full-scholarship to Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, where his music and acting training sharpened his ability to deliver power vocals and really sell a song. While at SMU, he directed the first gospel choir at the university, The SMU Voices of Inspiration. A proud brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc., Lawson also served as step-master for his award-winning brick-tossing Iota Omicron step team.Lawsons move to NYC afforded him the opportunity to perform in Verona and Milan, Italy in 2000. He went on to star in several musicals across the globe from New York City to Beijing, China. Hes played Collins in Rent and Berger, who isnt traditionally played by an African-American, in the rock musical Hair. Lawson pinpoints the time he sang one microphone away from the great Hollywood actor, the late Ossie Davis, as one of his most memorable moments on stage. If you scrolled through Lawsons IPOD youd find Sade, John Legend, Mary J., Jaheim, Chaka Khan, Syleena Johnson, and Kirk Franklin, whom he credits with being one of his biggest musical inspirations. Lawson credits much of his vocal style to the late crooner, Luther Vandross. Luther had the ultimate vocal instrument, versatile and rich. His voice caresses your spirit.Lawson says he sings to change peoples perspectives on life. When asked where he sees himself in five years, he envisions creating positive music that inspires, soothes and occasionally gets you in the mood. Since he first heard Used to Love You monopolizing the radio waves, Lawson has dreamt of working with John Legend. He is also looking forward to near future collaborations with Neyo, Kirk Franklin and the legendary Burt Bacarach.Lawson currently makes his home between Queens, NY and Los Angeles.
