Draft Day 2006
.. width="425" height="350" ..
Get to know the new Rookies better. They could be the next new stars of the NFL someday. Everyone knows the high draft picks. But the second day draft picks are just as important in building a championship team. Bart Starr was drafted in the 17th round and he led the Packers to numerous championships. More close to home here in Titans Nation Drew Bennett was not even drafted and never played wideout until after college, but Bennett has become a star in the NFL. You just never know where that diamond is going to be. That is why the draft is so important.
Here are the Titans draft picks in order from rounds 1 all the way to 7 with a short description of each player.
Vince Young
Draft: Round 1 - 3rd Overall
Height: 6-5
Weight: 228
40 Speed: 4.58
Position: Quarterback
College: Texas
Young is a rare athlete for a quarterback which allowed him to consistently make big plays -- both with his arm and his feet. Despite a raw throwing technique, he can get rid of the ball very fast and can make strong and accurate throws all over the field when he strides into his throws. He has the arm strength to make deep throws with zip and accuracy. He has outstanding playing strength to keep feet and make throws while defenders are grabbing at him and can run through tackles while scrambling. He is a great young man with outstanding character -- his work ethic, leadership and intangibles give him the tools to deal with being the leader of a team early in career (He will not be overwhelmed by having to carry a bad offense on his back as he did for Texas in 2005).
LenDale White
Round 2 - 45th Overall
Height: 6-0
Weight: 237
40 Speed: 4.60
Position: Running Back
College: Southern California
He is a surprisingly good athlete for such a big back, which allows him to make sharp cuts to get through the backside hole very well. He has the quick feet and agility to avoid tacklers in the backfield and can accelerate to full speed quickly. While he lacks explosiveness, he does get through the hole fast and has the play speed to make big plays once he gets to full speed. He runs very strong and aggressive, which helps him to consistently break tackles and gain yards after contact. He does a very good job of reading the defense to adjust to different blitzes, gets into good position and stands up blitzers in their tracks consistently -- very good strength as pass blocker.
Calvin Lowry
Round 4 - 102nd Overall
Height: 5-11
Weight: 197
40 Speed: 4.50
Position: Strong Safety
College: Penn State
Lowry is a tough safety who consistently is around the ball making plays. He reads the run fast and comes up quickly in support. He takes good angles to the ball and can break down and tackle well out in space when he stays over his feet and under control. He closes quickly on the ball carrier and has shown ability to run through and make hard and physical tackles. His instincts, quick feet and burst help him to get outside to make hits on the receiver right after he catches the ball, and to break and close quickly on passes in front of him. He shows good instincts and reactions getting out to the flat to tackle the running back right after the catch on a screen pass.
Stephen Tulloch
Round 4 - 116th Overall
Height: 5-11
Weight: 242
40 Speed: 4.87
Position: Inside Linebacker
College: North Carolina State
Tulloch is an instinctive linebacker who consistently reads-and-reacts quickly to the play -- consistently gets started towards the ball quickly at the snap. His instincts help him to play quicker than his 40-time. He is an active and competitive linebacker who hustles and chases after the ball hard in pursuit and has sideline range when he has a clear path to the ball. He flashes aggressiveness filling the hole on inside runs and can make strong and physical tackles when he bends his knees and stays under control - when he wants to, he can be a violent hitter and runs through his hits/tackles. He is surprisngly smooth dropping off the ball into zone coverage and gets out to the flat quickly to make tackles on short dump-off passes to running backs.
Terna Nande
Round 5 - 137th Overall
Height: 6-0
Weight: 233
40 Speed: 4.54
Position: Outside Linebacker
College: Miami (Ohio)
Nande is a good athlete with the playing speed to chase down plays from sideline to sideline. He has very quick feet and drops off the ball into zone coverage very quickly; he reads the quarterback well, breaks and closes fast and can either break up the pass or make the hard tackle right after the catch. He has quick feet and hips to cover the tight end well in man-to-man coverage -- He can flip his hips and stays right on the tight end's hip. He is a tough and aggressive linebacker who consistently takes on blockers strong at the point of attack -- when he is aggressive with his hands, he can jolt blockers and stay free to make tackles.
Jesse Mahelona
Round 5 - 169th Overall
Height: 6-1
Weight: 310
40 Speed: 5.15
Position: Defensive Tackle
College: Tennessee
Mahelona is a good athlete with the instincts and foot quickness to consistently burst off the ball, shoot gaps and get backfield penetration. He is a consistently disruptive force that is always in the backfield blowing plays up before they get started. He has the natural strength to drive offensive linemen backwards when he bull rushes and can stack the point of attack vs. one-on-one run blocks, sheds and makes tackle on inside runs at him. He does a very good job of getting inside the reach block, keep the offensive lineman on his back/shoulder and chase down plays in backside pursuit.
Jonathan Orr
Round 6 - 162nd Overall
Height: 6-2
Weight: 197
40 Speed: 4.42
Position: Wide Receiver
College: Wisconsin
Orr is a good athlete with the quick feet, acceleration and playing speed that is tough to find in a 6-foot-2 receiver. Once he gets to full speed, he has shown the ability to stretch the field deep and can make the tough catch with a defender on his back. He has very good hands and has consistently shown the ability to pluck the ball away from his body and can get down to catch the low pass easily. He does not hesitate to go across the middle to catch passes in traffic and will go up and catch the high pass, takes the very hard hit and holds on to the ball. He gets started upfield quickly running after the catch, can make tacklers miss running in the open field and has the playing speed to make some big plays.
Cortland Finnegan
Round 7 - 215th Overall
Height: 5-10
Weight: 189
40 Speed: 4.36
Position: Free Safety
College: Samford
Finnegan is an explosive safety who consistently flies around the field making plays vs. the run and the pass. He comes up very quickly in run support, closes explosively on the ball and can make hard, violent tackles when he stays over his feet and under control. He has very good playing speed chasing after the ball carrier in pursuit and has an explosve closing burst to make the tackle. He has very quick feet and consistently has shown the ability to read and react to the play very fast. He reads the quarterback/pass fast, closes on passes in front of him very quickly and makes hard hits after the ball arrives to break up the pass. He has the range to get outside to make plays on the ball in over-the-top coverage and has the hands to make the very tough interception.
Spencer Toone
Round 7 - 245th Overall
Height: 6-1
Weight: 235
40 Speed: 4.70
Position: Outside Linebacker
College: Utah
Toone is a smart and instinctive linebacker who sniffs out the play quickly, gets started to the ball fast and has the straight-line playing speed to chase down plays in pursuit. He is one of those guys whose consistent effort enables him to make more plays than you expect. He has the bulk/strength to hold ground vs. blockers when he takes them on aggressively at the point of attack. He does a good job getting outside to make the tackle on the running back right after the catch on screen passes.
Quinton Ganther
Round 7 - 246th Overall
Height: 5-9
Weight: 219
40 Speed: 4.56

He has good vision and instincts running with the ball, which help him consistently find an opening and follow his blockers well. He is a smart player, which has enabled him to line up at running back, fullback and as the move-blocker/ball carrier without making mental errors. His smarts and strength enable him to consistently step up and pick up pass rushers strong at the point of attack. He has good hands catching passes out of the backfield and has shown the ability to adjust to off-target passes.I edited my profile at Freeweblayouts.net , check out these Myspace Layouts!
