An inspired second-half performance by Panathinaikos saw the Greens defeat ten-man OFI 3-0 in Crete Sunday evening. Antonis Petropoulos, Dimitris Salpingidis, and Ante Rukavina all netted in a match that saw football become overshadowed by distressing scenes of crowd violence.
Early into the second half referee Dimitris Kalopoulos was forced to halt play for some ten minutes as police and fans clashed in the stands and outside the Pankritio Stadium. Players, staff members, and officials were ushered into the dressing rooms as flares and seats were thrown and tear gas was released, mirroring the recent turmoil across Greece.
The match started under relatively calm circumstances, though the standard of play was lacking. Both sides struggled to keep possession in a scrappy opening that saw multiple passes go astray and Kalopoulos whistle for 22 fouls in the first 23 minutes.
Despite their lack of attacking endeavor OFI were successful in playing a high line at the back. Giannis Matzourakis organized his defenders well as they employed the offside trap to great effect, Panathinaikos being caught in double digits.
The Athenians finally managed to break the trap on 26 minutes when Salpingidis raced tete-a-tete with Alexandros Kasmeridis, but the Greek international's touch past the keeper was heavy and the ball carried harmlessly out for a goal kick.
Seven minutes later Salpingidis again sprinted free, this time after Pierre Issa's untimely slip. The striker latched onto the ball and was headed for goal before being bundled over by Manolis Roubakis, who was promptly sent off by Kalopoulos for his professional foul.
Giorgos Karagounis stepped up to take the ensuing free kick, sending a low drive that Kasmeridis could only parry. Giannis Goumas reached the rebound first, but was unlucky to see his follow-up carom off the foot of the upright.
OFI signaled back in the 39th minute, Fabian Gerber laying the ball off nicely to Aleksandar Simic, who could only scoop his curling effort over the bar. It was one of the Omilos' few pieces of attacking play, the Cretan outfit hindered up front by the absence of Dame N'Doye.
Panathinaikos went on to dominate the proceedings and came close to scoring three minutes from halftime. Sotiris Ninis crossed into the area and Salpingidis met the ball with an audacious bicycle kick that beat the keeper but not the crossbar, skimming the top of it before going out.
The teams headed to the dressing rooms level, with the run of play favoring the visitors, who continued to make their numerical advantage count after the restart. Amid ongoing violence in the stands, the Greens managed to find the breakthrough on 52 minutes. Karagounis' lobbed cross was met by Petropoulos, who looped his header over an outstretched Kasmeridis.
The moment was quite poetic, elated goal celebrations in the foreground, chaos in the background - an eerie juxtaposition that manifests the complexities of modern football. Panathinaikos boss Henk Ten Cate and goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas would later try to calm the riotous fans down, yet their efforts, while admirable, were only temporarily successful.
The Trifili continued to push on and doubled their advantage just four minutes later. Salpingidis worked a clever one-two with Gilberto Silva at the edge of the area before rounding the keeper and slotting into the net.
The former PAOK player should have added his side's third shortly after, but failed to catch his close-range header properly from Nikos Spyropoulos' inviting cross.
Salpingidis would let another chance go to waste eight minutes from time. Substitute Andreas Ivanschitz was the provider, sending a ball in low across the face of goal only for the striker to push his effort wide of the target.
The third goal finally came in stoppage time, Ante Rukavina steering his header from Ninis' cross past Kasmeridis, as Panathinaikos secured three important points going into the winter break.
