Savoir Faire is Everywhere!

About Me

I grew up in a small town. It was sort of like Lake Woebegone when I was a kid. I went away to college, moved to a nice size community and never went back home afterwards for more than a brief visit. I am pleasantly successful in my career and comfortably happy in my life. I'm not running from anything or towards anything.I love summer and warmer weather, and truly enjoy bicycling when the weather is nice.I cycle on and off on being a sports fan. Right now I'm off so I know they're playing but I don't pay much attention.I'm in the process of growing older but not up so it seems. I have a keen sense of humor for the most part sometimes having the curse of making awful puns.Very liberal on social issues. But I'm a conservative fiscally!Somewhat a libertarian but only somewhat.Religious liberal. Some folks think I'm an intellectual, and some don't. I don't know much about popular culture as far as current music, TV or Cinema. I quit watching regularly years ago. I probably don't watch 100 hours a year; maybe not 50. Radio is more interesting to me. WCPE, WWHP...available on the internet. Cinema for me is a few movies a year and I like to be entertained instead of scared by them. Today's music choice is classical, jazz and folk. I'm interested in old recorded music.

My Interests

If I had my way, I'd shuffle off to Buffalo; Sit by the lake, and watch the world go by. Ladies in the sun, listenin' to the radio, Like flowers on the sand, a rainbow in my mind.Gardening...bicycling...reading...ballistics...history. ..political thought...technology...Linux the operating system...computer technology from x"00" to x"ff"...old tractors...railroads and railroading...ships, boats and maritime lore...traveling...fixing things...laughter...philosophy and theology...meditation...Hawaiian history and mythology and music...watching the world go by...peace!

I'd like to meet:

Mark Twain...Buddha...Napoleon...Jesus Christ....Socrates..Cosmo Topper...Alan Turing... Ben Franklin...Samuel Johnson...Abraham Lincoln...my parents and grandparents when they were 30...Tom Swift...Tarzan...Tom Robbins...Shadrack Bond...Harlan "Baby" Bliss...Walter Johnson...Aragorn...Gandalf...Ishi...Darla Hood...George McFarland...Carl Switzer...Isambard Kingdom Brunel...James Joyce...Bertrand Russell...Glen Miller...The Belle of Amherst...Captain John Carter...Elmer Keith...Sherlock Holmes...King Kamehameha...Philo T. Farnsworth...Harvey the Pooka and Elwood P. Dowd...Thomas Edison....Hari Seldon...Nikola Telsa...George Gordon, Lord Byron...Grant Wood....R. Buckminster Fuller...Frederick Douglas....John Ericsson....Harry Miller...J. R. R. Tolkein....Mozart...William Shakespeare...Isaac Newton...Hans Zarkov...Louis Armstrong...Ozma of Oz...Ing. Livio Dante Porta...Andre Chapelon...Augie Duesenberg...Witold Rybczynski...Alain de Botton...Beethoven,,,Duke Ellington...B. F. Skinner...Edgar Rice Burroughs...A. Conan Doyle...Captain Nemo...Roald Admundsen...Henry Ford...Walter P. Chrysler...FDR...JFK...Archimedes...Albert Einstein...Galileo...Bing Crosby...Hal RoachI'd also like to meet people who are curious about my wanting to meet the above group of characters, who are dead, alive and fictitional; figuring if you know enough about a character to ask about them, you probably hold at least one of my interests as your interest. Shadrack Bond...first governor of Illinois!And I'd like to meet interesting people in general!

Music:

Jazz....ical...golden age rock and roll...Big Band...Beatles...Rolling Stones...New Age...Folk...teeny tiny bit of country...listening to the "Whip" somewhere between Memphis and Chicago...Hawaiian Slack Key....Kay Kyser...Spike Jones...Hoosier Hotshots...Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers...Mike Oldfield...Christine Lavin....Moody Blues....Brother IZ...Scott Joplin...George and Ira Gershwin...Old Edison recordings....Jerry Jeff Walker...Riders in the Sky...Tom Russell, John Prine...Steve Goodman...Louis Armstrong...Jack Teagarden...Hogie Carmichael...Fats Waller...Keola Beamer...Four Bitchin' Babes...Greg Brown...Wynton Marsallis.....http://www.ranchocamulos.org/Ramona/..

Movies:

Put a whole bunch here...and it didn't take...phooey....Well the movie I liked most recently was "Triplets of Belleville".And "finding Neverland" viewed New Year's Eve!

Television:

TV is disappointing, basically. If they gathered up all of the televison sets and dumped them into the sea I'd probably not notice for several days.

Books:

Books, yes, plenty of Books. Books on Trains, books on planes, books on ships, books on books for that matter. Books on How to do, and books on what not to do. Books on blacksmithing. Books on Poetry writing. Lost books of the Bible. Books on Zen. Childrens' Books because they are so creative. OZ! Books on Buckskinning! Books on Computing! Not much fiction right now but if one wants fiction, I'd suggest Patrick O'Brian's tales of Jack Aubrey. Used to like Science Fiction but I'm no longer an adolescent. Science fiction writers are excellent about writing outcomes that are improbable because there's no opposition to really silly ideas. But if you must do Science Fiction, then almost anything by Larry Niven. "Ringworld" is fantasy beyond belief."Out of the Silent Planet" by C. S. Lewis...And Tolkein? What can I say? The World of Arda is fascinating beyond belief and there's much to learn beyond the Trilogy. Who has tackled the Silmarilliion?Read Vladamir Nabokov's "Lolita" sometime. Not for the sexy parts because by today's standards there aren't any. Read if for the literary quality! You don't see that in today's pop lit! Betty McDonald's "The Egg and I" will fascinate you with how well it's written, and yes, Ma and Pa Kettle are in it!Strunk and White's "Elements of Style" is worth having for those budding would-be writers.
