Mention St. Louis to someone outside the state's boundaries and the first things most people think of is the Arch, Nelly, Chingy, The St. Lunatics, comedy and country grammar. Granted, the StL-Gateway to the West, has recently within the last 4 years have grabbed hip-hop's attention with emergence of Nelly, Chingy and even Cedric the Entertainer solidifying this city as an emerging melting pot for true hidden talent, literally ranks close to the bottom of the national average when it comes to quality of life issues like education, employment, housing and has one of the highest crime rate of any U.S. city (though down from recent years). But a group of its native sons, rapper-producers B.I.G Worm, J-Soul and 2Tymez better known as the WormHole, are looking to break the mold and put their stamp on the local St. Louis and national hip-hop scene. The group has just completed their latest project, B.I.G Worm's solo debut- B.I.G Worm Presents..."Heart of the City." I sat with member B.I.G Worm outside Cicero's Restuarant in the Loop (located in the city's Central West End distict) to talk about his debut solo album, pepper steak, and the state of hip-hop.UP AND COMING MAGAZINE: St. Louis is known for its country grammar, sense of humor and the Arch but not much else. What's your home state really like? B.I.G Worm: Hot. I love my city and I hate my city. I love it because its all about family, rich in ol school values- pinics, family reunions and BBQ for no fucking reason ya know? I still got the same 5 group of true niggas I grew up with to this day(one love to 57!). I hate my city because its hella political and niggas be hatin' including the radio (YEP I SAID IT, THE RADIO)! PLAY MY SHIT! you know?! We got one MF up in this city calling shots and the industry on his dick. I ain't hatin' another man's come up, getcha money fo sho-that's what we all here for anyway but don't hold the next man down. Don't sign niggas and promise these young niggas a dream but sit on they projects. Don't blackball these lil' hungry niggas from getting theirs. Everybody trying to eat. UP AND COMING MAGAZINE: How has this so-called blackballin' of underground artist affected the St. Louis hip-hop scene? And who are you talking about? B.I.G WORM: These niggas is mad. I ain't talking about your average fan on the street. Niggas that's in this hip-hop shit fo real know who and what I'm talking about. You go to the radio, give'em yo shit, and they still don't play it. And they wanna be the first ones to say that they all about the underground unsigned artist. BULLSHIT! They playing who ever paying. They spinning the records from the executives. It's not about hip-hop anymore, it's about power and money and how much can we get. UP AND COMING MAGAZINE:

Influences: First and foremost, my biggest influence in Hip Hop is, was and will always be the impecable Tupac Amaru Shakur (Rest in peace). He was and still is in my eyez one the greatest lyracist of all time, from his deep hearted story telling, felt and delivered with the utmost and sincerest passion, to his bold and riveting style lyrics that challenged and intimidated all who sought to take him on whether it be his peers in the music game or politicians strived to stop his messages of power, hope and struggle...he will be truley missed but never forgotten (big ups to Afeni for raising one hell of a Martin Luther X of our times if you know what i mean, much love!) Other artists that have had a major influence on me, are Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound (Daz & Kurupt) (I grew up on these katz), Rakim & KRS-ONE (lyrical content from the ol' skool), 50 Cent (I dig his style and uncanny fearlessness to challenge anyone in the game)(no pun intended)(some of these wankstas need a wake up call, the industry has gotten too soft! Fo Reeeaaal!!!) NWA-"Niggas Wit Attitude" what can you say, The Game, he got style, The Notorious B.I.G (though, I don't think he's better than 2PAC but hey...still much respect!!), Jigga Jay-Z (can deny the man's flow), Nasty NAS (another strong lyracist!), I always thought MCs like Busta Ryhmes & Mos Def were somewhat underrated but clearly skillful when it comes to lyrics. As far as my down south homies go, Outkast, T.I., 8-Ball & MJG, UGK, and The "Original" Goodie Mob were also a big influence on how I approached my style of rhyme. Being from the midwest, I can't forget MCs like Twista, MC Breed, Bone, Thugs N Harmony and the newest but not so new addition to the midwest resume, Eminem. I have much respect for Em because despite the obvious black and white issue, this kat can rap no doubt about it, he got game and you can't hate on that!!! (keep doing yo thang white boy!!!). I also have a strong R&B influence from artists like R-Kelly, The Isley Brothers, Sade, Sweetback, Temptations, Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass, and a host of other ol skool to new (couldn't help it, my pops, Harry Davis Jr. raised me on these guys every Sunday like it was church!!). My musical intellect spans from Hip Hop to Rock, Blues & and Jazz, Classical to Contemporary. I love music as long as it's good music. If I forgot anybody (which I'm sure I did) I apologize, it's just too many names to name. In the words of LL Cool J, I can't live without my radio!!!!!!! Sounds Like: We have always been told from day one that we have a unique sound and that we sound like no one out there which I think is the best compliment an artist can be given. People have tried to label our style as Neo-Soul Hip-Hop (whatever the hell that means!!) I'm guessing we would be talking Digable Planets meet Outkast? I rather think of us as WormHole and WormHole only because we never wanted to be pigeonholed to any particular sound but our own that's why our influences vary in culture and genre.
