McCrary prevails in St. Joe return by Mike LovingSunday, May 18, 2008Donny McCrary returned to a local boxing ring on Saturday night for first time in 21 months.McCrary (24-7-2), the former contestant on ESPN’s “The Contender†and St. Joseph native, traded the glamor of television for a smoke-filled American Legion Post and gained a unanimous decision over Terrance Smith Jr. (5-6-1).Smith, from Joplin, Mo., once went the distance with local boxer Galen Brown, resulting in a no contest. But on Saturday, McCrary out-finessed the larger Smith, spending most of the evening as the aggressor.The bout appeared to be nearing its conclusion during the third round when McCrary landed a flurry of combinations and appeared to hurt Smith. But Smith hung with McCrary, who began to tire in the fourth and admitted, after the bout, that Smith came close knocking him down.“He hurt me,†McCrary said. “He caught me with one good one toward the end of the first round, and I was fuzzy.â€It’s not certain what’s next for McCrary. Something with “The Contender, Europe†could be in the works, but nothing is ever written in stone in the boxing world.
