About Me
Check out this great clip on Teatro Izcalli Teatro Izcalli Sin Verguenza is a San Diego based Chicana/o comedy troupe. Since 1995 the group has been performing throughout the United States from as far as New York City to the lights of Las Vegas at various local, state, and national conferences. Our focus, following in the traditions of La Carpa, Teatro Campesino, and Culture Clash, is to present the traditions, challenges, opportunities, and issues related to Chicano/as. Our actos (skits) address issues such as racism, Chicana identity, police brutality (i.e. “Real, Real Stories of the Highbuey Patrolâ€), education, and representation of La Raza in the entertainment industry. In addition to our actos, we have produced two full-length original plays: “Got Tortillas?†and “El Nopal Boy†which received wide acclaim and recognition.
In Spring of 2000, Teatro Izcalli was hired by the City of Chula Vista in San Diego County to present skits to dispel the misconceptions attributed to the census and the benefits related to completing the census form for their communities. We performed our skits on trolleys, restaurants, movie theaters, bus stops, and elsewhere to encourage Raza to complete the census form.
Another project is a grant from the Chicano Federation of San Diego County, Inc. for the 0-5 Project. We will be performing at community centers, parent groups, etc. throughout San Diego to educate Latino/a parents about good parenting skills for children 0-5 years of age. A video will also be produced through this project.
