About Me

NEXT PARTIES:
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME ;-)
Hi, I'm Bernard "MIXSOUP" H. from Liege, one of the most Rock'n'Roll towns in Belgium. I was born in 1969, a year sung and praised by some of my all time favourite artists: Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin "'69 annee erotique" and Iggy and the Stooges "1969".
What to say about me? One word: clumsy. I love having fun and laugh even at things you shouldn't. I have a dark sense of humour. I hate "politically correctness" and all forms of "-isms". I am sarcastic and love provocating... don't get upset when I am, it doesn't mean I don't like you, it's just another way of having fun. The more, I believe that having a sense of humour first is about being able to laugh about yourself.
I've loved music since I was a child. As a student I got involved in a concert agency in Liege called Pirata Concerts. So if you are or have been a member of Litfiba, Heroes del Silencio, Uzeda, Channel Zero, JL Aubert, Arno, The Scabs, No One is Innocent, The Buzzcocks, Urban Dance Squad, Mano Negra, The Stranglers, The Pizza Crushers, Hawkwind, Beautiful People, The Fleshtones, dEUS, Arno, Maceo Parker, Madredeus, Maldita Vecindad I Los Hijos del Quinto Patio + those I forgot and have played in Liege between 1990 and 1994 you must have seen me pushing your backline back then. I sure saw you... and at the end of the day that's what really matters to me.
In those years I used to do a weekly rock show called "Ecchymoses" on a local radio as well. See the logo graffiti artist Pogo did for it:
I have written in various papers amongst which the Belgian edition of Popular1, a Spanish rock magazine. I did reviews and interviews (Danzig, The Young Gods, Daniel Darc, Claw Boys Claw, Holygang, Urban Dance Squad, Max Cavallera,...) I've worked at the production of Dour Music Festival (I was one of the guys sitting in a caravan waiting for the bands to come and get paid).
All these years I went in the best club in this City: La Chapelle (RIP) to dance, watch people but mainly to observe the DJ: Bernard Dobbeleer. He has always been and will always be one of my favourites. He is the one that made me understand that making a crowd dance is not a matter of beats but a matter of groove. He was and is able to mix soul with electro, funk with new wave and disco with rock, and more and more and more. His sets are ecclectic and homogeneous... I love that. He is my inspiration, my mentor. From my side, apart from 2 or 3 private parties, deejaying never got further than mixing for friends in my bedroom.
I've worked as a student and after as well in every significant record store in Liege, be it 2nd hand store or retail... Yes, I worked here, there and here and there and there as well.
Then I started working in offices and slowly left the world of music and nightlife. In one word, I was becoming a young old bore until I got settled with Antoinette. In 2001 she had an exhibition in a pub called "Le petit Paris" in Liège, the bosses wanted a DJ. Antoinette had seen me mixing once for fun years before. She bluffed them & said I was excellent and would do the job... although I hadn't mixed for years and didn't have any records left! No matter, I would play the old 7" in the attic of the cafe. The two bosses loved it and offered me a monthly residence. Things got rolling afterwards I got several residencies in the city: Spoon cafe, Rock City, Le bruit qui court, Aussi Près, Le Pot au Lait and I occasionally play at Soundstation and L'escalier. Thanks Antoinette, I would never have got there without your big mouth.
I've mixed with: Atomic Antoinette, Phantom feat. Marie France, The Pussy Sisters, UFO Goes UFA, They came from the stars I saw them, Tu seras terriblement gentille, DJ Slow, Al Plastic, Bernard Dobbeleer, I Am X (aftergig), Hollywood Porn Stars, Milk (aftergig), my brother (as The HAUFFMEN), Elektrash [Makes Me Sick], Poni Hoax (aftergig), The Feeling of Love (aftergig), with Cyclop Revolution for the Experimental Tropic Blues Band + The Micragirls & Heavy Trash aftergig and more...
When it comes to spinning the decks my one and only aim is to make you dance. I love ecclectism which doesn't mean I would play anything (I have a minimum of pride guys!). I'm not cold, I'm open minded. I am not pretencious which does not mean I don't know what I'm worth ;-). Whenever you see me come and talk to me. Wondering what track you're hearing? Come and ask there is no reason for shame baby. I play various styles of music ranging from the 1950's to nowadays. It is normal for you not to know everything even I sometimes forget the tracks I'm playing. I love to meet new people and have a talk anyway.
Be carreful, I love talking about music. Don't believe I'm a bragger, it's just that I love sharing anecdotes about the people I interviewed, saw live, etc... It's nothing more than enthusiasm. By the way, you can contact me in English, Dutch, German and French.
