DOWN IN ASHES - BIO
At a time when many groups’ music genre requires several sentences to describe, you can summarize Down In Ashes in two words; Hard Rock. No gimmick, no prescriptive attire, no band wagoning. Just four guys, a tonne of attitude, an air of mystery and a recollection of rock’s mid-90’s revival when pure energy transmitted through guitar strings defined a generation, only to be scarcely heard of since.
From the shadows emerges Kim Vincent (lead vocals, guitar), Shawn Kelly (drums), Koji Okazaki (lead guitar) and Yves Lavigne (vocals, bass). Combined in the unlikely backdrop of Canada’s pristine capital, Down In Ashes provides a gritty contrast that has Ottawa audiences turning off CPAC, abandoning their cubicle farms and seriously on the verge of bringing back the mosh pit.
In ’04, Shawn and Kim met. ’05 saw them struggle to find like-minded band mates. By ’06, with Yves and Koji on board and the right ingredients in place, Down In Ashes released their first demo. Anxious to improve production and insistent that they maintain constant momentum, the ambitious band soon after recorded an official debut in ’07. With arousing tattoo artist cover art, their first disc Sexy Machinery hints at myth, meanness and machismo but emotive vocals and melodic overlays reveal a softer side.
Before a disc was even pressed, Down In Ashes had already earned a reputation on the stage. Shawn’s Animal-like antics behind the drums, Koji’s spontaneous use of teeth on guitar strings, Yves’ undeniable physical presence and Kim’s tender and tortured vocal performance make for a solid evening of entertainment. The band’s natural tendency to simultaneously engage, inspire and involve audiences has earned them Battle of the Band’s titles and an accumulation of local fans. Next step – more local airplay, more Montreal and Toronto shows and a willingness to entertain offers from interested labels. In the meantime, you can catch Down In Ashes’ soul bearing musical aggression on many Ontario rock radio stations, MySpace or in Ottawa’s finer beer slugging establishments.
