Formed in Wanganui in November 2003, Vatikan have emerged onto the New Zealand music scene as a four piece (Hate Myhell – Vocals, Sam McLea – Guitar, Dion McGregor – Bass, Stefan Sarten – Drums) that stands apart for their diversity and originality.Gaining numerous airplay on Paul Martins Axe Attack and securing the weekly montage slot on XSTV with the single ‘Man of Hate’ from their E.P. ‘Awaken’, and countless gigs up and down the country, Vatikan have gone from strength to strength.Describing their sound as jazz/metal fusion, Vatikan have drawn from their many musical influences, from Pantera, Alice In Chains and Slayer to Steve Vai and Dave Matthews Band, to create an original and truly unique sound.Against this backdrop, the instrumentation and experimentalism of the writing process has produced elements of other musical genre easily discernible in the arrangement of the songs. The stirring melodies and chord progressions of their jazz inspired songs stand in fitting contrast to the heavy thrash which comprises most of their material.Since moving to Wellington in early 2006, Vatikan have gained a loyal fanbase and are set to release their debut album ‘Evilution’, scheduled to hit the stores in 2007. Coinciding with the release of ‘Evilution’ will be a North and South Island tour, and with plans to move to Auckland in 2007, this hard working band are poised to kick open every door in front of them.
