BJ Sunfire is missing. The last contact anyone has had with him was almost a year ago. He spent a magical 2006 season as an assistant trainer for the Green Bay Packers which they ended with a pleasantly surprising .500 record. After that, he stated his intention of returning to Indiana, reconnecting with estranged collaborator Boston McReady, and composing material for a new album.
BJ breezed into Bloomington one Saturday in the spring of 2007, "ripe for a little bally-hoo," as he said it. He met up with me and some of the folks from the 19th State collective to shoot a short film, "Studio Studs." Then he said that he needed to run out for some Zimas and a spiral cut ham. That was the last we've heard from him.
Could he have returned to Green Bay? Was he convinced by McCarthy that his presence was key to the Packer's success? If so, McCarthy was right. As I write this, the Packers are enjoying a leisurely wild card weekend, first round bye sewn up weeks ago.
I just don't have any proof that this is true. A free-spirited soul, BJ could literally be anywhere. riding with the Gauchos of Patagonia, wandering the volcanic wastes of Iceland, working on a freighter in the Indian Ocean. I hope that he is happy and healthy. And I hope that he returns to us one day, bursting with tales of his travels. I hope he's not dead.
To make our wait for Godot a little more pleasant, I've pulled some tracks out of the vault. These were demos recorded in preparation of a full-on Bucknaked Badasses album, with producer Markus Ello. They are a bit rough, and a bit over-indulgent. But I hope you enjoy them as a peek inside Sunfire and McReady's process.
Be good to eachother, live compassionately every day, and have an open heart. BJ would want it that way.
