It was 2005 and the original band discovered one another while playing various clubs, bars, and coffee houses in and around San Luis Obispo, California. Soon the Shamblers were born. Featuring singer-songwriter-front man Lucas Ohio Pattie on a hard-driving, muscular, rhythm-based guitar, completing the band were seasoned musicians Mike Marotto on bass and lead guitar and Colby James on drums. As the Shamblers, they emerged with an energetic sound topographically and sonically surprising – a hard-edged rock fused with elements of blues, jazz, folk, pop, and country. A riveting performer delivering songs in an impassioned voice, Pattie is often compared to the legendary Jim Morrison. San Luis Obispo’s New Times declared the power trio “a new folk rock phenomenon†-- a band exceeding the sum of its parts.
Pattie’s dynamic melodies deliver the timeless, evocative lyrics of a seasoned poet, his songs brilliantly supported by shifting tempos, textures, and adventuresome arrangements.
The Shamblers are perhaps best described by Elton John’s first producer and lead guitarist Caleb Quaye as having a “cohesive uniqueness extraordinary for a new band.†Lucas Ohio is a great “storyteller . . . songwriter . . . and expressive vocalist.â€
Delivering energetic, scorching sets, the band developed a large, loyal fan base which quickly lead to the Shamblers being among the most talked about bands along California’s Central Coast. The 2006 release of their self-titled debut album followed-up by their 2008 CD “Steps Toward Home,†were critically well-received and cemented their reputation and legacy as among the hottest bands on California’s Central Coast. However, with members starting families and forging new careers, the band came to an amicable but bittersweet conclusion in 2008, each going their separate ways.
The New Times celebrates Pattie’s songwriting and performances as something “too great for the little musical way station we call the Central Coast.†And others agree. With the band’s recent dissolution, Pattie has taken advantage of the opportunity to transition from his San Luis Obispo-based career to a new creative home base in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here, he is building a new band where he will continue to write and perform songs that in his words “evolve, connect, and revitalize.â€
