About Me

Singer/Songwriter, Independent. I've been singing since I could talk. Singing seems to come from the core of my being. I grew up (sort of) in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, heartily drinking it's amazing culture and music long before I was of legal age. I managed to learn to play hockey first, and then guitar seemingly by osmosis along the way. In that neck of the woods, if you don't play hockey, or an instrument of some kind, or sing, for sure you love a drink or two and love to party, and that's where, most assuredly, you will find people sharing music. A common scene I remember at house parties is a circle of people, young and old, literally passing the guitar around, taking turns singing songs. Someone plays the piano, someone plays the fiddle, a bunch of people with percussion instruments, be they pots, pans, boxes of macaroni - the kitchen can produce a stunning array instruments - and everyone joining in singing. You can't escape the music in Cape Breton and I'm thankful to have spent an important part of my life there. I gradually moved my way across Canada after high school first stopping in the nation's capital where I was a page in the House Of Commons for a year and attended Carleton University. Then on to the prairies where I lived in Calgary and joined my first band in the winter of 1984. Six years and a couple of bands later I moved to the west coast where I studied music for two years in college (Jazz Music, Malaspina College, Nanaimo) and in the bars for many more, paying my way through college and beyond by playing gigs wherever, whenever. Released the Moris cd (recorded at Island Pacific Studios, Nanaimo, B.C.) in 1996. Since the untimely end of that band I've been touring the globe in cover bands. I've recorded sporadically over the past globetrotting years - thus the release of r_evolution (2006 Lindsay Martell) It's a compilation of stuff from that period that was never released. There's more in the vault too. I'm still here - still singing for my supper. I feel I have lots of music in me to come out these days and the desire to keep writing, recording, playing and singing. I can't imagine doing anything else but rockin' and rollin' right through this life. I'm currently working on a new bunch of tunes on the acoustic side which I will release very soon, I hope. Cheers, Lindsay.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.lindsaymartell.ca
Band Members: Me. I sing and play guitar. Lots of solo acoustic gigs lately. If I play with my band it's usually Brock Miller on guitar, sax and vocals, Todd Sacerty on bass and vocals and Phil Wipper on drums. Chris Aiken drums and provides recording support (Sound Design Studio-Warsaw) when I'm in Poland.
Influences: Stones, Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Jackson 5, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Lyle Lovett, Daniel Lanois, Ray Charles, the list goes on and on...I keep thinking of more names of those who have influenced me over the years - Yvan Cournoyer, Bob Gainey, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bob Marley, Elton John, U2, Stompin Tom Connors, Don Messer, Gordon Lightfoot, Carlos Santana, Mark Messier...and there's more....how could I forget Denis Landry, Chuck Berry, Neil Young, Chaka Kahn, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams...
Sounds Like: All of the above at one time or another. I have a deep respect for the pioneers that travelled their similar roads before me. Thanks to them, I've had the best teachers over the years. Musically, it's all been done already. I draw from the deep well of a pop music legacy they left for the world. Hopefully it sounds not too much like any one of my teachers, but more like me in the end.
