Eryk's Ear

About Me

Kind of snobby, hyperactive, nosy, sensitive. My ears are one of the alpha-body parts of the whole body. My ears will force my hand to the radio station dial if the music is unsatisfactory, and the music on the radio is never satisfactory.
My ears seek out sound, and violently resist that which tries to impose upon them.

It's all because of the 7th grade, when the cool kids were talking about one of the other cool kids. "He's got a great cd collection" they said. My ears, already active, decided that they could do something to elevate my social status, and so with that they went to the record store for the first time and asked my hands to purchase an LL Cool J cd. They also wanted REM's "Green" album because they liked the song "stand", but they were sure that LL Cool J was cooler. They were right, at the time.

My ears used this philosophy with girls, too. In the same year, I began to make mix tapes of songs recorded off the radio, which were then given to girls I liked. The girls responded well when the music was stuff they didn't know, but liked, and so I began to listen to the college station and the late night sunday shows of alternative rock stations.

By the time I was in high school this had become an obsession, to the point where my ears weren't picking music for the girls, they were picking girls for the music. If you didn't like the strange homemade vinyl noise release I got from the mail order catalog then I probably didn't like you. The end result was suprisingly succesful: I met the coolest girls and I listened to some of the best music. But my ears were snobs, there was no way around it.

I started making my own music shortly thereafter, and my ears had less to do with that than did my spastic teenage energy level. By playing with the radio made tapes I learned how to distort the sounds on cassettes. I bought mixing equipment in the eight grade and started scratching vinyl, not in a DJ way but in a horrifyingly noisy avant garde sort of way.

That was my ears. My ears get kind of miserable sometimes. They're the junkies of my body, always needing a new fix, and that fix has to get stronger every time. I worked in a record store out of the need to solve this addiction to sound, and turn it into something productive.

My ears are one of the ruling organs. Snobby, bossy, in control. If you like my ears, then we'll get along fine.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Songs that are revelatory, simple, beautiful, authentic, sincere, noisy. Words that are welformed and bursting with ideas. Silence, either complete silence or natural silences filled with chirps, squeaks, and wind. I love the sound of noisy, hostile birds that won't stop making horrible noises. I don't know why.
