Kyle Therrien of Another Option is frank about the goal of his band.
"We want to make a job out of it."
And they're on their way. The Westport quartet has built a litany of tour stops from Burlington, Vermont, to Michigan to Virginia. Most of it has been done on word of mouth, but at the same time they're still selling copies of their 2005 seven-song release "Sweet Sedative"
The band was set back from their aggressive tour schedule when a Mack truck demolished their tour van, but they'll be back on the road soon, promoting the 10-song release, "The Smoky Trials of 1985." The album is on All About Records out of Taunton, MA and will be available along with the band's t-shirts at the label's tent on the Warped Tour. The band will not be playing on the tour due to the financial rigors and time demands.
Another Option is completed by fellow founding member bassist Andy Calheta, guitarist Ryan Flinn, and drummer Ian Provost.
Calheta claims that his band's touring tribulations have brought them closer together as a band.
"There's no group of guys I'd rather spend time with in a cramped van," he says with earnest.
At this time the band is pretty much breaking even out on the road. Seventy-five to a hundred dollars a night will get them food and gas to get to the next gig. Occasionally they make more. Sometimes they get to sleep in the houses of people on the tour route or sometimes they sleep in the van. Another Option is selling out shows in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York. Therrien says that ninety percent of their shows are booked via Myspace, which basically functions as a portfolio for promoters and an electronic advertisement for fans in the vicinity of a show.
The band is hoping to extend their touring route to the West Coast and Florida.
But last Saturday night the band had a monster gig at the Living Room in Providence, opening for local butt-kickers A Wilhelm Scream. AWS has been a big influence on Another Option, having achieved international status and become a band that has achieved the dream of living off their music.
"We've been listening to them for a long time and they've done so much for us," Therrien says. "They've been a huge influence and a huge help. They're a band that's out there doing it and that's what we want too. They're making a living off of it."
"Those guys have really improved a lot since I saw them six months ago," says AWS guitarist Trevor Reilly. "They were the opening band Saturday night and they really kept people's interest. Kyle's a great, soulful singer. They're getting confident and they're impressing a lot of people.
