It all started with a dream. A dream that music comes from the soul and that it should not be guided simply by commercialism and hot trends. Believing in this dream, Kelvin B (better known to the music world as Saint) and Silvano J (better known as Yung City) came together to form an independent music imprint. The vision was to create a label by which artists could express their true creativity, whatever that may be. The vision was to create a label that mirrored originality and the basic intrigue of music itself. And so Elementary Records was born.
Starting with absolutely nothing but an idea and the passion to make it happen, Saint and Yung City formed the first rap group to represent the label: The Canary Boyz. The name of the group itself was chosen to represent the journey of something small into the skies to fly high above the rest. After the formation of the group, the duo began to collaborate with various producers and artists from the Bay Area and proceeded to make music. The Canary Boyz music had an energetic ans swag based focus, closely associated with the Bay Areas Hyphy Movement.
The Canary Boyz were for a time the only acts affiliated with Elementary Records, but the group recieved a moderately warm response from people in key positions in the music industry. Convinced that they had found a good way to market themselves, Saint and Yung City took matters into their own hands and built a recording studio of their own. It was the creation of the studio that allowed the two the creative freedom necessary to branch off into differnt kinds of rap. It became apparent over time that Yung City had a gift for executive production and it was then that a new segment of Elementary Records was created: Yung City Productions. Saint, after strong urgings from Yung City and others in the industry, went on to start recording solo projects under Yung City Productions. It was the division of their two creative abilities that set the stage for Elementary Records to move into the next stage of its development.
With a studio created and two acts affiliated with the label (both The Canary Boyz and Saint as a solo artist), Saint and Yung City began to search for other talented artists to diversify the sound and quality of the label. The first new artist to join the Elementary family was the Richmond-based rapper Evolution aka EVO. Not too far afterward the R&B/pop singer Chris Ramos teamed up with the imprint. Next to come was the rapper Tre, followed by the singer Keidra. Now, with a greatly amplified roster of talent, Elementary records has grown into a diverse and well recognized family of artists, all bringing different skills and variety to its ranks, but all following the most important principle of the label: creating good music no matter what.
