In fact, Philadelphia's homicide total for 2007 is 128 people-far outpacing other major cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles-whose populations are much larger than Philadelphia's 1.5 million residents.The violent crisis gripping Philadelphia also does not seem to be abating, with 12 people killed since Friday in the deadliest four-day stretch of the year. With the weather warming up and more people taking to the streets, police and law enforcement agents are worried that the alarmingly high murder rate will continue to rise.30-year-old police veteran, Lt. James Dambach, who heads the city's Strategic Intervention Tactical Enforcement unit (SITE), a squad which was created last June and is responsible for patrolling Philadelphia's streets at night, tells Philadelphia Daily News, "When the weather starts turning warm, our senses pick up. We have to be much more aware of our surroundings," adding that, "If you go down almost any street, the chances are good that you'll find a person who has a gun on them, or has easy access to one.""The things that normally people would have had an argument over now escalate into shootings at the drop of a hat. It's disconcerting," Dambach added.The rising crime rate has also affected Philadelphia politics, prompting all five Democrats hoping to succeed Mayor John Street as the city's top official to propose new crime plans. Despite, the creation of the SITE unit, nearly all the new proposals recommend hiring hundreds of new police officers to the current force of about 6,600.
