Stephen

I'm as jazzy as a French Quarter funeral.

About Me

Right now I'm a week away from finishing the final project of my master's education : we're making a prototype of a magazine that (in this instance) will actually be put into production someday soon (hopefully). It has an environmental/community theme with a central New York focus, and we're calling it Envi.
I dug holes for five years of my life, until I got tired of it. I still see myself as a misfit archaeologist, in fact, but I guess I've gone all legitimate. In my heart, though, I'm still covered with dirt. Still, I miss the job to an extent. Actually, I mostly miss the people and working outdoors.
In other news, I'll be back in Albany soon, looking for a job. Any way I can get a "Welcome Back Happy Hour"?

My Interests

Archaeology, history, current events, people watching; karate, tennis, racquetball, weight lifting, New York Giants football; movies, music, internet, videogames; writing, sketching, photography; chess; cooking.

I'd like to meet:

Whoever crawls out of the woodwork. Which, really, has been nobody lately.
Feel free to IM me: LuxRonin
I'd really love to get into Parkour. Check it out at Urban Free Flow if you don't know what it is. Anyone in the area that can show me some basics?

Music:

If you're a music snob, you'd hate what I listen to. I can almost guarantee it. Personally, I find discussions of music to be like discussions of religion: passions get heated and opinions passed off as fact. I'll answer obliquely and say that I'm into most genres: rock, some rap, electronic, jazz, blues, classical. I'll listen to most anything, really.

Movies:

If you're a movie snob, chances are I'd hate what you tell me to watch. To me, going to the movie should be an event. For $10, I'm not going to sit and watch a film that would be just as entertaining or moving at home on my TV. I generally go for action and adventure three times the size of ordinary life. Once it's out of theaters, it's fair game, though. With that said, a few favorites (this list is not exhaustive):
Lord of the Rings Trilogy; Matrix Trilogy; Harry Potter; Indiana Jones Trilogy; Lethal Weapon Quadrilogy; Batman Begins; The Last Samurai; Tango and Cash; Road Trip; Eurotrip; Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves; Robin Hood, Men in Tights; Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon; anything with Brandon Lee; anything with Chuck Norris (since way back, not due to his recent internet popularity); a plethora of B martial arts movies most of you have probably never heard of.

Television:

Sunday: the Fox cartoons; Monday: nothing now that Arrested Development (the best comedy on TV ever) is no more; Tuesday: nothing now that Gilmore Girls is over (it was my guilty pleasure. Lauren Graham is still my goddess, though); Wednesday: Lost; Thursday: My Name is Earl and The Office (the new best comedy on TV).
The only show I hate to miss is Lost. In fact, now it's the only show I follow faithfully.

Books:

Fiction: Lord of the Rings trilogy; anything by David Eddings; Harry Potter series; The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander (probably my favorite series of books. I just read them for the first time in 15 or so years). Yes, I enjoy fantasy but don't read every author in the genre; finally, assorted Batman trade paperbacks.
Also into literature: anything from Dante's Divine Comedy to The Three Musketeers, and Mark Twain to Dsotoevsky.
Non-fiction: currently working on "The Island at the Center of the World," by Russell Shorto. It's about Dutch Manhattan, and is a great read. Which is fortunate, because it's taken me months and months to read it. Oh, and Gov. Spitzer referenced it in his inauguration address earlier this year, which I thought was pretty cool.
I'm definately not as well read as I'd like to be.

Heroes:

My grandfather. I miss him a lot.

The last hoop of the semester

A perfect night for grilled meat and cold beer, and instead I'm in the library eating beef souvlaki and sipping iced coffee. The deadline for this horrendous, 25-page paper for the aforementioned anth...

The Doomsday Scenario Liberals Want You to Believe

When it comes to doomsday scenarios, it's a virtual grab bag from which we can choose these days. Some end-of-world notions are backed by theology, others by mysticism, most by pseudo-science and...

Animated Guilty Pleasure

I have a piece of writing due tomorrow. Which means, naturally, that I've been browsing Google video.  I admit it: I love Yu-Gi-Oh! (The exclamation mark is part of the title, not my own addition...

The Archaeological Record

I can't say that I knew Chuck Fisher well. In fact there were times the first few years I worked at the museum I wasn't completely convinced he knew my name. He was, however, a hell of a nice guy...

Snobbery

So I'm sitting here at my old coffee shop, typing away at my laptop, a book on the table, and my cell phone out - ready to answer it, just in case it rings.  It's dawned on me: I've become one of...
