David Lee started playing music at an early age with his grandparents and uncles in Reedsville W. Va. There was a square dance every weekend and the family always provided the music. David also played the trumpet and baritone in high school in the Crestwood high school marching and concert band. He also played guitar and electric bass for the high school stage band, tenor banjo in a polka band and guitar and bass in a chicago tribute band. After high school David joined Jim Metz and started "The Bluegrass Gentlemen". The members included Jim Metz on Banjo, Virgil Hardbarger on Fiddle, Donald Roberts on guitar and David Lee on bass and Mandolin. David also made guest appearances with John Douglas and the West Virginia Travelers, and the Butler Brothers Band. In the early 80's David Joined Robbie Brake and Jim Brenner and founded "The Bottom Line". The Band consisted of: Robbie Brake on mandolin and fiddle, David Mayfield on guitar, Jim Brenner on banjo, and Scott Salak and Missy Raines on Bass. David also did some recording session work for Seana McDowell who was female vocalist of the year in Australia.David and Val met in the fall of 1981, fell in love at first sight and started having babies. During this period David and Val both played in various bands in northeast Ohio. Then together they started One Way Rider as a country band. The band first consisted of David on electric guitar, Val on mandolin, Jim Click on electric guitar and fiddle, and Ray Cook on bass. They played all over the state and became the house band at the Hurdy Gurdy in Poland, and at Ponderosa Park in Salem Ohio. One Way Rider played out about 5 or 6 nights a week and we were the opening act for many of the country stars including Marty Stuart and Patty Lovelace. David and Val also performed as a duet and would play at the Red Garter Saloon at Ponderosa Park after the main show was over. When Bass Boy started playing we totally changed our format to acoustic bluegrass , newgrass and gospel music.David plays a 1974 Martin D-18 guitar and uses Martin sp phosphor bronze strings and he likes them blue picks. David also drives the bus and says "Yep I recon" on stage.
