Influences: The History of File 13:
File 13 Records has been a communal and musician-run label since 1989. F13 was founded in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was more utilitarian than a business. It provided a medium for bands that found time and money in their usually fleeting careers to put together hand-screened 7" singles, 12"'s, and then finally CD's. F13 was introduced to a national audience and sort of legit distribution with bands like Chino Horde and Thumbnail touring self-releasing records through the label.
After being run by various Arkansas scene supporters, Matt Werth became the manager of the File 13 and moved to Philadelphia for college. F13 became an epicenter of Philly's independent music scene. Matt Werth [then bassist for Aspera, now bassist in Favourite Sons] partnered with fellow musicians Atom Goren [Atom and His Package] and Brian Sokel [of AM/FM and Franklin] to release albums from groups like Lenola, Matt Pond PA, National Skyline, Antarctica, Burning Brides, Bent Leg Fatima, and The Lily's. File 13 continued to gain recognition worldwide.
Matt, Brian, and Atom all decided to retire label ownership in 2002 after releasing the debut from Need New Body and an Atom and his Package CDEP. Longtime contributors Stephen Schmidt [Chino Horde and Thumbnail member] and Justin Sinkovich [Thumbnail, Sterling, The Poison Arrows, and Atombombpocketknife member, co founder of Epitonic.com and betterPropaganda.com] resurrected File 13 in their home city of Chicago that year. By 2005s end, Stephen and Justin released music by the Chicago groups Red Eyed Legends, Sterling, The Dishes, Atombombpocketknife, The Poison Arrows and TRS-80; plus albums by NY's Martin Rev [of Suicide], Odiorne, The Silent League and Philadelphia's Need New Body. 2005 also found File 13 releasing albums by bands from abroad for the first time -- Tokyos My Way My Love and Bologna Italys Franklin Delano.
