Natural Roots (NEW MUSIC UP)

About Me

Natural Roots was formed in 2004 in Sacramento, California, and has helped to forge the California Reggae-Rock scene ever since. The band is composed of Eric Tillman (lead singer and guitarist), Logan Phillips (bass), Ben Gunnerson (Drums), and Weston Harris (Percussion and auxiliary instrumentation). The band released its first demo “Slippin From Society” in 2006 and shortly after began playing many shows around the Sacramento area. Natural Roots has opened for major bands including Rebelution, The Expendables, Sublime Remembered, The Ramones, Agent Orange, E-40, along with other big acts touring through Sacramento. They attracted a huge local following and easily sold out the venues in town. In 2006, singer Eric Tillman moved from Sacramento to Chico in order to study Recording arts at CSU Chico and the band’s popularity grew. They continued playing shows and began hosting events in Chico. Some of the major events include: Labor Day Bikini Bash ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, and A Halloween Monster Mash in ‘07, each with over 1,000 people in attendance. In 2008, the band played with The Expendables on Chico State’s Campus with over 2,000 people in attendance! The band members have recently been in the recording studio working on their first full-length album. The studio EP “Uprooted” will be available February 2009. This talented young band has an uncanny ability to move a crowd and put on a great performance.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Eric Tillman: Guitar / Vocals

Been playin in Natural Roots since the beginning of time.. I just got a Gibson Les Paul Studio, and i play it through a 1960 Marshall cab using a number of cheap amplifiers that don't work very well, although sometimes I use Fyre's bad ass Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier when he is away on business n' such. My sweet ass new guitar is really helping my creative juices flow out all over. I enjoy writing about stories and situations from my life. I find song writing to be a strong form of therapy, and its also a good way to free yourself from your surroundings.

Logan Phillips: Bass

I play a fernades bass and an ibanez SRX500HS with a peavy cab and ampeg head. I've been playing bass and writing songs since I was 14 years old. My biggest musical influence would have to be the Grateful Dead. Mostly because they are the godfathers of improv. Now I know they weren't the first ones to showcase their improvisational skills on stage but they defently took it to a whole different level. My other main influences include Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, Boosty Collins, Thelonious monk, Midnight, Flea, King Tubby, The Uppsetters, The Heptones, Parlament and any musicians who choose to take the road less followed.

Ben Gunnerson: Drums

I started drumming at the tender age of 3, but things really took off once I could reach the pedals. After learning the basics by way of my dad I continued to teach myself everything I know. Some major influence comes from drummers such as Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Nick Mason, Jose Pasillas and of course Danny Carey. I enjoy playing everything from jazz and funk to metal and punk; but my heart is in blues and reggae. I learned to drum on a 1987 Yamaha Power V, 5 piece kit; but am playing a 7 piece Pearl export series with a Yamaha birch custom piccalo snare for now...

Westin Harris: Percussion / Auxillary Instrumentalist

My setup consists of 2 LP Congas, 2 LP Bongos, and a Remo djembe, all of which are set on Meinl and Gibraltar stands. My mentor, an African man named Mamadou, taught me that the most potent of all medicines lay within the head of a drum, and he was right. Through percussion, and music in general, I can most eloquently express myself, and I see no reason to ever stop. I am particularly influenced by cultural spirit music like Nyabinghi drumming, the haunting sounds of the Native American flute, and the toxic energy of Middle Eastern dance rhythms; but I also find pleasure in the more modern sounds of Groundation, Gentleman, Beef, Easy Star All Stars, and Jack Johnson just to name a few.
Influences: First of all, we like to think that we have our own unique sound... But our music was shaped according to the music that has taught us how to Groove! some of our favorite bands are: Sublime, Bargain music, Pepper, Expendables, Slightly Stoopid, Avail, Social Distortion, Bob Marly, Steel Pulse, Phish, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Half Pint, Ben Harper, Victor wooten, shakedown, long beach dub allstars, sizzla, Groundation, Zeppelin, Metallica (Matt), TOOL (Ben) Pink Floyd, the Greatful Dead, Skynard and many others!!!
Sounds Like: good music
