...Once upon a grime...
In the quietest corner of an urban park not too far away from your house there was a playground. Unlike any normal playground in any normal park this playground was not inhabited by children. It was not inhabited by anyone. No one played in it. The swings were pushed only by the occasional breeze, the climbing frame was never climbed, and the monkey bars never monkeyed. This was a neglected landscape. One long overlooked in favour of happy slaps, ipods and ringtones. A sad reminder of the golden age of recreational municipal spaces. This was the last great Adventure Playground.
As time went on the thick bushes that surrounded the playground were pruned less and less, and eventually the park keeper gave up trying to unlock the gate altogether. The bushes grew tall and thick, and the gate rusted shut. To walk past where the Adventure Playground used to be, you wouldnt even know it was there. Soon the sand pits and paddling pool would be totally clogged with mud and leaves, and the last of the paint on the climbing frames would fade to nothing, leaving them to crumble away. It was a totally forgotten place, left to fade in the lonely silence where childrens laughter used to live...
...At least it was totally forgotten until one fateful afternoon..when quite unexpectedly, four old acquaintances, found themselves stumbling back upon the beloved Adventure Playground they had all long thought disappeared. Each had a different reason for being there and yet something intrinsic and instinctive within each of them had called them to wander away from the paths of the park that day. One by one they appeared out of the thicket that now surrounded the playground, and as they spotted one another quizzical disbelief took hold. Why today? How did each know to return to their oldest of haunts on this otherwise unremarkable afternoon?.
It had been years since the they had all been together in one place, and yet it couldve almost been yesterday. The jokes and songs flowed and it wasnt long till they all felt like those same four children who used to sit in the playground all those years ago. But something in the air had changed. It wasnt where they sat now, in amongst the swings, see-saws and merry-go-rounds. It was beyond the boundaries of the playground. Beyond the park, it was the world in which these four friends now inhabited.
What they each had come from to get to this point was equally unique and mysterious. Hardships had befallen each member of this quartet, each was now a hero in his own right. But there was no denying that whatever existed outside of the Adventure Playground none of these four felt more comfortable anywhere else other than here. In amongst the wild neglect and the music and memories. The remnants of their joyous youth.
They made a pact then and there. To remain undisturbed in this Adventure Playground day and night. To sing dance and jape in the same way they had always done. To continue to do so until what lay beyond the boundaries of the playground made sense..
So if you are passing that quietest corner of the park near your house, and you hear singing and dancing. It'll be those four lost souls telling stories and living dreams until it all makes sense. Don't make a sound for fear of disturbing them, but if youre very curious you could always listen for a bit. It just might make sense for you too....
