Forever Donovan

happy wife, happy life. advice to Brian from my Dad. truer words have never been spoken.

About Me

"Do you hate the taste of energy bars? Do you prefer the taste of pizza? Is that one reason why you run? So you can eat pizza? And potato chips? And chocolate bars? When you see all those running ads that show people running in poetic places like Death Valley at dawn, do you just wonder? Wonder where you can find a cold beer in Death Valley?" --NikeMost likely it's been a while since you and I have seen one another. Or perhaps we have never officially met. So let me take this moment to introduce myself.I am a perfectionist but I like to get the end result with as little effort as possible. Some may call it lazy, I call it efficient. If you knew me before I was married, then you probably knew me as Donovan. There used to be a time when I would get asked, "Hey Donovan, what's your last name?" I'm not quite sure why it followed me all those years...but I always liked going by my last name. Giving up my maiden name was one of the hardest parts of marriage for me. Yes, I suppose I could have been one of those nonconformist, liberal feminists who refuse to change their name. Or I could have always done the pretentious hyphenation thing, but in my position, it just made the most sense to take my husband's name. After almost 4 yrs now, it's growing on me. I guess I have the rest of my life to get used to it.I still do have friends who call me Donovan--those are the ones who have known me forever. It always makes me smile and think of happy times. Times of walking into a bar and knowing all its patrons...even the regulars who keep to themselves. When we were younger and knew all the right people--the bouncers, the bartenders, and who was throwing the after-party. It reminds me of getting up before the sun to make it to practice on time and going out on a Tuesday because the weather is beautiful, and wouldn't it be a perfect nite to sit outside at the Brook...my first job, and drinking at the gym with El Jefe...GWIT, and "We don't do lines--do we LOOK like we wait in line?"Life has taken a twist. Donovan is my daughter now, but ironically, we call her Lulu--a nickname derived from her middle name. The old Donovan is lucky to make it out a few times a month rather than a few times a week. But I'll never be ready to cut off my ties to the old Donovan...if I do that, I may as well admit defeat and grow up.Oh Yeah, almost forgot. I like Sausage. a Seriously I have the cutest baby in the world. All others pale in comparison. Lulu's 1st Year and Then Some

My Interests

My husband and my daughter--I love everything about them, they are my biggest passion. There is nothing better than hearing Lulu laugh or meow like a kitty. 2007 is the year of the triathlon. I have decided to get back into the racing scene after taking a 2 year Mommy-hiatus. Rowing--though I have no idea when I will ever get the opportunity to row again--I miss my teammates. The closet nerd in me also loves math, I just find solving problems satisfying. The internet, I find it so fascinating, but I wouldn't call it a hobby as much as I would an addiction.

I'd like to meet:

I really would like to meet the inventor of POP ROCKS...and Brett Favre...and Johnny Knoxville...and Vince Vaughn...and Barney from How I Met Your Mother

I'd also like to meet some GIRLS in the Fayetteville area--whether it be work out or go out or just hang out...I miss having my girlfriends nearby!

Music:

I am always on a kick to find underappreciated and up-and-coming artists. Some of my favs: GERRAM MATHEWS. David Gray. StarSailor. Pilot Speed. The Postal Service. Eisley. Idlewild. Making April. We The Living. Doves. Placebo. Sufjan Stevens. Damien Rice. DIRTY JERSEY. Keane. Travis. Remy Zero. NATALIE TIDWELL. Brent Jordan. Jem. Imogen Heap. Citizen Cope. Jeff Buckley. Elliott Smith. Charlie Dodrill. Pete Yorn. The Strokes. Death Cab for Cutie. Modest Mouse. Ryan Adams. Matt Kearney--I predict he will be the next big thing. Have someone you think I should hear? Shoot me a message.

Movies:

I'm a sucker for stupid comedies--Old School, Anchorman, Wedding Crashers, Zoolander etc. Office Space which I hope to never be able to relate to again. I really liked Lost in Translation, but I'm not sure why. And Sideways gets better the more I see it. The Natural will always hold a special place in my heart.....

Television:

LAS VEGAS. Grey's Anatomy. Desperate Housewives. How I Met Your Mother (long live Doogie!). Veronica Mars--yes, Veronica Mars--I stumbled upon that show and now I am hooked. My guilty pleasure is reality television, but I find it like a car wreck--you know you shouldn't watch, but you can't look away.

Books:

This is like music for me, how can you just narrow it down to a few? I just finished Goodnight Nobody and it was uncanny how much I could relate to parts. Marley and Me is a humorous read for any dog owner. I have liked To Kill A Mockingbird since I first read it in the 6th grade. Catcher in the Rye was a good one too. I like pretty much anything by Dean Koontz or Michael Crichton

Heroes:

There are days of my life I will always remember. The day I met my husband. The day we got married. The day I found out I was to become a mother. The day our daughter was born. The day of the accident. Our daughter was burned in April 2006. At our babysitter's house. I wrote a blog about it. She suffered from 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her head, neck and arms. It was an accident, but our babysitter was found negligent. It should have never happened, but it did and I can't change that. All I can do is help my daughter recover in the best possible way. Please don't pity me or my daughter. She doesn't need your pity. The accident hasn't slowed her down in the least. It may have altered our lives forever, but it has also made us stronger. My daughter has endured more in her short life than most will in a lifetime. My daughter--at 15 months, she has more strength and courage than most adults I know; everyone could learn something from her.
