In an era where the clothing style and throwback aesthetics of an artist is often sold as a substitute for quality product; Chicago emcee/producer Selfish embodies the reactionary essence of marginalized hip-hop artists who will actually deliver clever lyrics “coated in dirt” and layered over heavy beats laden with obscure samples and unconventional structure. Having produced tracks for Decay’s first album “In Retrospect”; and released his first critically acclaimed album solely as an emcee with Green Llama comrade Fluent “Uncut Raw: First Toke”, Selfish has defined himself as someone who does not allow himself to be limited by what other people think he should be doing with his music.Selfish & his Green Llama crew are interested in exploiting the creative potential that still exists within hip hop; but at the same time being versatile enough to stay away from being categorized (even by their own assessments). Selfish sees the value in these topics, but believes that they need to be approached more creatively and also augmented with other themes that are typically overlooked.
