VALERIE FAY MAYFIELD
Proud mama of Jessica Lea Mayfield and David Ray Mayfield and Amanda Lynn Mayfield. Valerie performs in her family band, (One Way Rider). She plays mandolin, guitar, and bass, vocal lead and harmony. Co wrote the songs Ratcreek Concerto and Guesse's River along with her one and only son; (David Ray Mayfield). Valerie named the instrumental ( RatCreek Concerto) after the holler her Father's family lived on, called ( RatCreek Rd.) located in Pound, Va. Val has many fond memories of her trips with her family back to old Virginia and Kentucky.
Her mother Goldie Lea was born in a cabin somewhere either in Kentucky, Virginia or West Virginia. Her father was born in a cabin up on Glady Fork Holler, in Pound. Va. Her son wrote a song called (Glady Fork) it is on his latest CD. He also performed this song on the Grand Ole Opry at the young age of 18. Valerie had one brother, ( Larry Sergeant) who's life was tragically taken at the young age of 34, by a drunk driver.Valerie also had the great honor of performing bluegrass music with her brother and her father in their own family band called "The Sergeant Family" Valerie was lucky enough to have been brought up in a Bluegrass Family. Her brother after age 18 moved away from home, and began his own bluegrass band in his early 30's, they recorded two albums with his band "Allen Creek Coal Company".Valerie's family band consist of her husband of 28 years (David Lee Mayfield)
her son ( David Ray Mayfield ) and her daughter (Jessica Lea Mayfield') At one time her oldest daughter (Amanda Lynn) played banjo with them. She has been busy going to college. Valerie homeschooled all the children. Her father made sure there were always plenty of instruments around. Her father (Victor Sergeant)
loved to buy instruments all kinds, good and bad. Valerie would just leave the instruments lay all over their little doublewide trailer, for the children to pick up and play at anytime, and they did.
Folks thought Valerie was crazy for wanting to keep her 3 children home all year round, with all those instruments. She loved it! And she will treasure those memories of making music around the house always.Valerie's family studied about everything that could happen in the music business. Finally the day came when they sold everything they owned and moved to Nashville, Tn. Where everyone kept telling them to go. They bought
a old bus, and when they arrived in Nashville, they found out that they didn't just buy any old bus, that they had bought (Bill Monroe's Historic 1956flx known as (The Bluegrass Breakdown)! Valerie's family didn't believe it at first. Valerie says the family bought the old bus from a nice widow lady, and only her late husband knew the history.
The stories we have heard since owning the bus for the past 6 years, are enough to write a book. Many stories from artist who toured with Bill. Peter Rowan said he drove our old bus the first year he worked for Bill Monroe.
