Traffic homicide investigators late Monday were trying to determine who or what caused a ruinous three-car wreck that left three people dead and eight injured in Fort Lauderdale early New Year's Day."We're trying to piece it together," Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Katherine Collins said of the crash at Broward Boulevard and the southbound Interstate 95 exit ramp. "Speed and alcohol are definitely going to be considered, but that's not something we're going to know in the next few days. There was a lot of damage."
Kyle McKay, 21, of Fort Lauderdale, was killed in the crash. The names of the other two who died -- a man and a woman -- were not released because their relatives had not yet been notified.Collins said that shortly before 2 a.m., a Mercury Sable carrying a man and a woman, followed by a Suzuki Aerio with five people inside, turned east onto Broward Boulevard at the I-95 exit ramp traffic light. At the same time, a fully restored 1971 Chevrolet Impala carrying four people was heading west on Broward Boulevard.According to a short incident report of the crash, the Impala, driven by McKay, smashed into the driver's side of the Sable, spun in a circle, then hit the Aerio. The impact pushed the side of the Sable two to three feet inside the passenger compartment, said Assistant Chief Stephen McInerny of Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue."Both [victims] appeared to have been killed instantly as a result of the tremendous impact on the driver's side," McInerny said.
