Born Again Heads

About Me

London: Young Rupert and Carlo used to record distorted guitars and freestyle shouting over very strange drum programing and keyboards from 1995-1997 by which time they found themselves in a confused hip hop crew of 4 rappers who called themselves Main Aim. This went on for a year or so. The weekly meetings somehow just phased out but from here Rupert and Carlo continued their efforts..................................................... ....................................................They recorded onto a four-track by pausing and unpausing the record button as videos were rewound repeatedly to recapture the 2 second samples as precisely as possible for them to loop well enough over the drum programing or hits played in through the yamaha keys, which itself was going through various guitar effect pedals. This stopped when a computer came over........................................................ ..................................................In late '99 Carlo moved away to Brighton and came across the dane Naim through a mutual friend called Andy. Naim was previously in a group of people who play with vinyl record players together. He would do this with Andy and reminisce about his old crew. He had also previously spent time in a real music studio and seemed to have aquired some knowledge. Carlo heard Naim's music and thought it was weird but wonderful................................................... ................................................After introducing Naim to Rupert the visitor, the three began to record. They made the songs 'Still Trippin' 'Space Pigeons' 'Cerebral Warfare' 'Nuts Like Squirrels' and kept making more songs and began performing poorly at bad student nights. After toying with the names 'Alpha Flight' and 'Think Again', 'Born Again Heads' came to be and stuck....................................................... ....................................................Andy was also producing his own music but never finished anything for years to come... his story is told elsewhere in its entirety as he becomes The Evil Sun. Carlo, Naim, and this guy Myles, or Miller as we liked to call him, or Mylo, Milton, Martha, Mergendorff, etc... etc... moved in together.. Rup visited frequently and music would be made. The 27 Beats foundation was built and ethics were put in to play. A cassette called Mixed Nutz was released. 55 copies. this is the year 2001. we got the tapes back around christmas 2000 and began to sell them fresh at the very start of the year. I remember it well. It featured Naim and Carlo's beats.. Rup, C (without the 'arlo'), Jonsept, Firewater, Applehead Bone Daddy, and Naim on vocals. Shockingly, people said they liked it.. this made us feel good and so we continued................................................... ..............................................The following year, Mixed Nutz vol.II was released on CD. 355 copies. This instalment was a lot better than the first attempt. it featured more local talent and higher production values.. Rup had moved in to the 27 Beats house also and this was the peak of our productivity together as Born Again Heads....................................................... ................................................yawn........ ............................................................ ....................................Naim moved back to Denmark in mid 2002 and immediately began to make babies with his girlfriend. Rup, C, and Miller lived on at the 27 Beats house with latest lodger/producer Steve (aka Steve Clear). Eventually Rup and C moved back to London. Naim sent beats back to Rup and C so they could work on a proper Born Again Heads album.. Things slowed down a lot as Naim was a key factor into the chemistry and atmosphere that Rup and C fed off to be born again.. without him, attitudes got dismal and despair became the source for new material to feed off of. Rup and C did however make several trips to Copenhagen and record out there which was nice. performances were also put on whilst out there.. which were much fun......................................................... .....................................................All of a sudden, Rup was in demand. Friend of Evil Sun, Naim, and C through studying music, was the boy who became TM Juke. TM Juke went on to marvellously create an album 'Maps From The Wilderness' and had it released through Brighton label Tru Thoughts. He had asked Rup to do vocals on the track that became 'Wilderness Kids' and it went down very nicely. Before we knew it Rup was on tour with the TM Juke band who went on to play several countries around europe...................................................... ..................................................Since Naim (the driving force) had gone away and Rup didn't seem to fuel any ideas for plans on the 27 Beats front, C kept the torch lit and took charge of the operation. A 7" was released on 27 Beats in 2004. 'Death Jam/Rampage'. 260 copies. Featured the vocals of See (yes... C.), Rup, Kope, Jonsept, and HP. Some special turntable hardcore musicality by DJ Kruzh'Em (Naim's danish associate) and production from See and Evil Sun. Several magazines praised it. By now, Steve Clear and Evil Sun had decided to release a Rup 12" single and launch their own record company 'Hear Today Records'... They produced 3 songs between them and Rup did the raps. This record was critically acclaimed but stayed within the murky realms of an 'in-the-know scene'...................................................... .................................................Since then 27 Beats Entertainment have released their 2nd 7" single. 'TimeQuake/Distance'. 200 copies. Rup & See on the raps, Jack Baker Trio (who also studied music with Carlo and the aforementioned individuals) and Gabriel Cornish (long time friend and weird hero) on production. Simon Janes on cello. This was released in summer 2005 and was well recieved... A lot has gone on since then.......................note: the debut B.A.H. album is more or less done and looking for a home........To be continued...
