Baring the marks of mainstream modern rock and divvying the spoils of all things indie, emo and shoegaze amongst its members, Three and a Half Stars first surfaced in the summer of 2001. Favoring overdriven electric guitars and armed with an intense girl drummer who doesnt mind exercising her God-given right to topple your preconceptions, the band came into its own playing the Philly & Eastern PA circuit and released a glimpse of what theyre about on the 2003 EP Lawn Chair. Every good band needs a creative guitar player and this band hath dos! Prone to anything but hold back, the lead guitars run the gambit between thoughtful coloring and even-tempered tones to raucous riffage and calculated chaos while the singers foundational progressions and rhythm interplay with his voice the way the brooding bass is soul mate to the drumming. This is straightforward, but by no means predictable, songwriting informed by both the woeful ponderings and inadvertent wit of the lead singers haunted yet hopeful lyrical imagery. Vocals drip with emotion fueled by thought provoking honesty and an oft-tortured candor while tense harmonies drive the last nail in. This is a band thats not afraid to lose themselves in the live setting, feeding off one anothers energy until theyve drained the reserves still, quite approachable everyday people after the show. Early fans will remember the first time they were disarmed by the lure of the radio-worthy Fine. Few escaped its wrenching bridge and explosive solo. And just when you wondered whether theyd outdone themselves a song like Silver sparkles to life, somehow stirring in you optimism even as it laments. Contagious all over again.
