Jean-Francois Kellner, a big fan
of African music and culture,
began his career as a guitarist
but quickly went on to make a
name for himself as a talented
multi-instrumentalist. In the
course of his career Kellner has
worked with a host of leading
African stars such as Salif Keita,
Toure Kunda, Brice Wassy and
Tony Allen, as well as playing
with top-name French pop acts
including Philippe Leotard,
Carole Laure and Jacques
Higelin. Kellner is also very active
on the French electro scene,
working as part of the
''Reminiscent Drive'' collective
signed to F Communications. He is working now with the algerian singer Souad Massi
Kellner recently took time out
from his hectic schedule to start
work on Woo-Ssay, a project he
set up with African diva Aissata
Kouyate. Fusing modern
production techniques
(synthesisers, samplers and
computers) with traditional
African instruments such as the
Malenke flute and the djembe,
Kellner and Kouyate have been
working on a joint album (which
is due for release very shortly).
The Woo-Ssay sound promises
to launch an innovative new form of world music from Paris, capital of the new ''sono mondiale''.
