Rafi Singer has had the opportunity to wear a number of hats in the music world. At age 9, he began studying piano, with the ultimate goal of learning the organ. As time progressed, though he enjoyed the 88-keyed beast, he found himself drawn to the world of percussion, and began playing drums at age 12. His pursuit of music led him to the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT, where he studied both recording engineering and jazz drumset. Upon graduating in 2007, he moved north to establish himself in the Pioneer Valley.
This past January, he traveled to Ghana, where he studied Gyil (a 14 key xylophone of the Dagara people) with Bernard Woma, as well as Ewe drumming with Emanuel and Reuven Agbeli. He has continued to study with Mt. Holyoke college Professor Faith Connant.
A a performer, Rafi holds down the drum chair for the Amherst reggae band Mystafine and is an occasional performer with the Isaac Young Group. He currently offers private drum instruction to a number of students, both in the Pioneer Valley and Connecticut. As an engineer, he recently finished mixing an album for the Isaac Young Group, entitled "The Alpha State," which can be found here at CDbaby.com . Rafi is the co-owner of Cryonic Sound Recording, which provides both freelance engineering and on-site recording. He is also a regular sound engineer at the Pearl Street venue in Northampton, MA.
