T9k is a duo group that consists of two rappers, Philla (C. Edwards, 22) and Skizzle_Beats (A. Jones, 24). The name T9k stands for Two Born Kings, with the 9 representing the nine months before new life is born. Philla and Ski chose this name because they believe that they are the new voice of the south. Originated in the small town of Morehead City, North Carolina, Philla and Ski both had to endure a lot of struggle and hard times that they both try to reflect in their music. Those struggles, along with beat production from Ski and others including J. Stubbs from Breaking Out Entertainment and Odeezy from Head Fake Productions, help to add their originality to the down south music trend. Their first album, Time Will Tell was released in 2005. With songs like “Hey Shawty†and “Da Head†the album sold over 1,000 copies locally, which is a major accomplishment considering the racist views of the community. Although some of T9K’s music has been played on the radio, including the group’s first single “Can’t Be Your Man,†their main focus is mix tapes. They have been featured on Dj Barry Bee’s Hooked on Gangster Music, which is a popular mix tape in North Carolina. They are also a part of the Slip-and-Slide Street Team and their song, “Fresh†is on the team’s website. T9k has been the opening group for artists such as Young Cash, Lil Daddy and Mario of M.O.E in Atlantic Beach, NC.
