Now playing: D2D Kmerk
Born and raised in the city of Yonkers , K Merk began his long journey in the music world at a young age. His mother was a local DJ in the city many years before he was born which meant music was flowing thru his veins. Writing poetry at a young age and playing instruments, merk began to appreciate music because he viewed it as an escape from the real world. In 1996, merk wrote his first verse and there it begun. For many years merk would put together songs onto industry beats, making songs with his first group called yungunz. “Flowing to industry beats was okâ€, merk says, “but I got tired of spitting to them. So I started teaching myself how to make beats as well as record my voice over beats.†By 2000 merk went on to form another group with two of his brothers called R.I.P. Here he learned how to mix down tracks and by this time was a pro in beat making. “I enjoyed this part of my life because I really learned how to structure songs and what a song really was. A lot of people at the time were doing a lot of gangsta rapping and I would venture away from that and make a lot of party music and girl tracks.†As word spread throughout the hood that there was a producer / engineer / rapper in the area, many people began to approach him for studio time. Here he met Young Nolo, one of his partners till this day, forming what would be called Lyrical Myricals. Kmerk & Young Nolo would then rap together for 8 plus years. "Me & Nolz been getting it in for the longest. There wouldnt be no merk if there was no Nolo and vice versa." By 2002, merk moved to Miami, FL. Here he linked up with his cousin J.Gordi and local up and coming artist Snopak. “I learned a lot from Sno. He brought us to the official studios and all his shows. I eventually became his hype man and would be performing in front of crowds that reached 2000.†In the year he lived in Miami, merk appeared at Calle Ocho with Snopak, performed at the Bayfront Arena with the likes of Piccalo and Fat Joe, appeared in Snopaks video for his song “Outoftownersâ€, and also began his solo career with an independent label. In 2003, merk returned to New York to begin on many projects including mixtape which connected him with Khan, a Philly based rapper, & and a long business relationship with Yonkers local artist Dutch the Kid. Merk produced two songs for Dutch which eventually got into rotation in Atlanta based radio stations. “By this time my beat making skills were getting better and better. I was waking up 7 am every day just to work on my music and would not stop till midnight. I definitely was grinding.†In 2007 merk moved back to Miami, staying for a year, where he would open a studio with J. Gordi. Learning how to master his engineering skills with pro tools, merk now had all the tools he needed to create good music. Now, back home in Yonkers, merk is continuing his journey by making sure he gets heard, working on many projects stretching from New York to Miami to Philadelphia and anywhere else he can get it.
