I was born in Austin, TX. I've been singing my whole life, and I've been playing the guitar since I was fourteen. The first guitar I got was a nylon string guitar. It has affected my sound ever since. Consequently, my style of songwriting and playing is sort of a folk/flamenco/sufi/country/ bluegrass/blues sort of thing. I call it folk-fusion for short. My recordings reflect my expiramental side, as they incorporate alot of effects, samples, sytnths, organs, and random instruments.
So, I started out as a singer-songwriter, and that I remain, but I took a few twists and turns along the way. I grew up as a performer on the stage of the Ruta Maya coffee house, playing every tuesday at the open mic. I started out with only a few songs, so after a few weeks, in an effort to not be repetitive, I wrote two new songs every week. After a while, I got so comftortable at winging it, I started improvising songs on the stage.
I then started getting some gigs at Ruta Maya, and played each with some sort of band that usually was made up of my friends and family plucking on basses and cellos and banging on random drums...
I then got a weekly residence at Ruta Maya, and after awhile, I started improvising those shows, making up songs as I went along. I had an irrational fear of being repetitive, even though no one ever came to more than one show, except for the barristas....
And then I went to NYC, and it kicked my ass into gear...I realized that I needed to tighten up my sound if I was going to get noticed, so I started cropping my songs, and I cut out the improv, except for when I played on the subway.
Eventually, I realized that New York was not the place for me, so I headed back to Austin.
Back in Austin, I took my new found artistic discipline and fed it into the Violent Nap Album, and into my new band, Infinite Partials. Check out some songs from Violent Nap on this site, and check out Infinite Partial's Myspace page!
