Alex Luce is a musician whose drumming and production work can be heard on Fox Sports radio & television programs. He is the author of HOW TO BEAT A DRUM, a Guide to Expert Technique. Along with degrees in music and cinema he also holds an MBA.
While attending the University of North Texas in 1985, the author was approached by a fellow music student who demonstrated a drumming movement he called “the stroke”. The stroke was described as a physical approach to the drums modeled by observing the technique of master drummers such as Joe Morello, Steve Gadd and Vinnie Colauita.
Intrigued with the movement, and realizing his current technique was inadequate, Alex began practicing it using the exercise outlined in his book. Within a few months he was able to completely change his technique and successfully learn the motion. Years later, after researching the body’s mechanical basis for this motion, he began calling it the “lever stroke”.
The author believes the lever stroke is the underlying movement for the technique of today’s top professional drummers. It has made an amazing difference in his own drumming, allowing him to play with great power and precision while remaining relaxed and tension free.
