About Me

My name is Lydia Jackson Emerson. I live in Concord, Mass. and go by Lydian because my husband, Waldo, is annoyed by the way New Englanders often mispronounce words ending in "a" by ending them in "r". So to save me from being called Lydier, I now go by Lydian. It does not bother me too much, However, I ocassionally find myself upset at the fact that my husband will not call me by my real name. I very much like his nicknames for me though: "Asia" and "Queenie"; I find them sweet and often times fitting. People consider me a devout Christian, to which I do not argue. My faith is my virtue and is very dear to me for I believe a Life without God, is no Life at all. I consider myself to be quite the witty conversationalist. Some may go as far to say that I am a feisty debater. Again, I would not argue with such an assesment of my character. I feel that women have a difficult time being heard and one should never be ashamed to stand her ground and go beyond being seen. Although I do not agree with everything Transcendental, I do consider myself a member of the Transcendental Club and feel that my devotion to our Savior keeps the group grounded, ralistic, and practical. I am highly opposed to slavery. No one has the right to control another, most of all through brutal means. In regards to women, marriage to an unfit mate is equal to slavery. I would even go as far to say that a childless woman would perhaps do well not to marry.

Duties of all Men (including Women) -From my "Transcendental Bible"

Never hint at a Providence, Particular or Universal. It is narrow to believe that the Universal Being concerns itself with particular affairs, egotistical to think it regards your own. Never speak of ...

Neighborly Duties - Another exerpt from my "Transcendental Bible"

Loathe and shun the sick. They are in bad taste, and may untune us for writing the poem floating through our mind. Scorn the infirm of character and omit no opportunity of insulting and exposing them...
