I am here for Friends

About Me

I love philosophy. This DOES NOT mean that i'm comfortable with it all the time. I'll be starting up the somewhat demoralizing and exhausting grad school application process, working, and being artsy-fartsy. i am also currently (okay, always) worried i will NOT be accepted into grad school and what my options might be in that case. I'm worried that i'll always be in this purgatorial, in-between place...there's a blog in there somewhere. Anyway, I enjoy reading and/or watching movies more than just about anything. I have great friends who take care of me all the time-- in that way i am truly lucky. I love ice cream (especially when it's served with some fantastic cake made by Meccanator). i love my solitude. i'm a sucker for people and songs that tell stories and i believe that having a vision of what i want my life to be is absolutely essential-- if i didn't, i would be dead right now. *******In addition, i feel one of my favorite movie quotes should be included here. What he says really "resonates" with me (thanks for the word, buckmoon). It is John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler in 'Say Anything':"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed... or buy anything sold or processed... or process anything sold, bought or processed... or repair anything sold, bought or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."

My Interests

philosophy, books, art, music, movies, good food, good people

I'd like to meet:

Albert Brooks, Gloria Steinem, Brendan Fraser,John Cusack, Billy Crystal,Timothy Busfield (insert throaty growls here),Shia La Boeuf, Susan Sarandon,Anthony Bourdoin, and that dead guy Richard Feynman. As for the rank and file of the universe, i look for smart, funny, creative deep thinkers out there who still make time to enjoy and laugh at pop culture. AND i like people who give a crap about something other than themselves. ***IF I AM NOT FOR MYSELF, WHO WILL BE FOR ME? IF I AM NOT FOR OTHERS, WHAT GOOD AM I? AND IF NOT NOW, WHEN? That's a quote by Rabbi Hillel (a Jewish scholar and all around mensch who lived in freakin BABYLONIA (30BC- 9 AD)!!! ***As for the rest of you chowderheads....i make my decisions on a case by case basis. Please submit friend application forms in triplicate with 2 forms of id and 3 references. There is a 6 week turn around period. All decisions are final. Bribes and obsequious flattery are welcome and on some level ENCOURAGED.

Music:

i really do like all kinds of music although LOTSA electronica, ALL death metal, and MOST tejano are hard for me to take. Anything by Toby Keith, Celine Dion and Shania Twain, in my opinion, should be consigned to the shithouse; "from shit you were conceived and unto shit you will return." okay, off my soapbox...sorta.

Movies:

yes, please.

Television:

Documentaries rock but in terms of shows....The Simpsons, Two and Half Men, Grey's Anatomy. And i still like to watch Fraser, Seinfeld and CHeers reruns... those shows never stop making me laugh. New additions --Studio 60:it's intelligent with quick, smart & funny dialogue and plus i get to see Timothy Busfield and Bradley Whitford on a weekly basis, which is always great. Unfortunately, it's already been cancelled...when i think about how long that fucking Married With Children crap was on--it makes me CrAZY!!!! 30 Rock is funny. And if i had cable, i'd watch Anthony Bourdoin's Travel show. that guy's HOT!

Books:

I read all kinds of books, although in general i read a lot of non-fiction. At this point though, i'm reading chingos of fiction and it's been okay. Reading philosophy and ethics too and trying to get through that crazy frenchy Foucoult. I don't like him too much but i imagine it has something to do with my complete fucking ignorance of his ideas...so i'm trying to remedy that. My favorite writers are: Kurt Vonnegut, John Irving, Joan Didion, and Mark Twain. If you haven't read JOan...DO IT...IT'S GOOD. DO IT NOW...I COMMAND YOU. okay, so i'm not REALLY commanding you but your Joan Didion score on the DFE (Dahlia Friendship Exam)is a BIG factor in the selection process. I'm just saying.

Heroes:

Atticus Finch and anyone who is compassionate towards my species; Jane Goodall and anyone who is companssionate towards other species.
