About Me

Born in Crumpsall North Manchester in 1966 I first started playing at 13 through the school system. At that time Manchester had a great network of music schools running all across the city. Without which a good few of the musicians my age would not have made it. My family had music on in the house all the time. My parents used to run folk nights in the 60's and 70's. Mike Harding started a club with my cousin Martin Gittins. All sorts of things were going on. I just remember lots of music. When I was little I used to sit outside my brothers bedroom late at night and listen to the John Peel show.
I started running gigs and putting bands together at 16 years old, and spent most of the rest of my time camped out in the Band On The Wall (the best ever (kept the spirit with Matt & Phred's)) just soaking it up.
From March 1999 until recently I've been promoting Jazz in Manchester at the club that I conceived, started, ran, promoted and was licensee of;
Matt & Phred's jazz club
I've now left the club to pursue my first love of the music with through various projects such as my trio Riot and others to be announced soon.
Cheers,
Matt Nickson
