One listen to Flashman and its clear that this is no trend-following, bandwagon-jumping unit. Sweeping grand-scale themes are underpinned by skittering beats and strangely, magically become songs that make your head their home. Its the sound of a partnership thats far more than the sum of its constituent parts
But what parts they are.
Previous to Flashman, vocalist Renns astonishing, uncategorisable abilities were called upon by the likes of Basement Jaxx, Mantronix, Fun Lovin Criminals, Anastasia and Robert Miles. And even before such artists came knocking, the North Londoner was opening shows for Jamiroquai and De La Soul with his own mid-90s outfit Original Son.
A chance hearing of some tunes in the Jamiroquai management office eventually brought Renn into contact with his now partner multi-tasking programmer/producer/drummer Steve Alexander. A man whose career has been as wide-ranging as the very sound of Flashman.
Steves rhythmic flair has seen him work with Papa Wemba and Jeff Lorber, but its perhaps the three albums and four years with Duran Duran and his recent tenure with Jeff Beck (who crops up on two Flashman tracks) that says more about his breadth of talent. Steve collaborated with the groundbreaking guitarist on the Grammy Award winning album You Had It Coming and during his three year stint also enjoyed a Grammy for Best Live Performance.
Not content with a high profile ride as sideman however, Steves solo material brought him to the attention of drumnbass dons 4 Hero, who signed him to Reinforced Records in 1998. His 12 Isometric singles and EP brought significant critical acclaim and lead to work starting on a follow-up for Sony Japan, amid solo tours of South America, the Far East and Europe.
But the next chapter is all about Flashman. A year in the making, the debut album is set to enrapture and enthral, transporting listeners to a place faraway from the pop production line and play-safe rnb. Its like nowhere youve ever been, but youll soon find yourself at home.
