Born in East Harlem, DJ Smalls started his career in the music industry in
1994. What once was a hobby that started at house parties has now become his
life and love. In a short amount of time, Smalls had already spun at some of
the hottest venues in New York City. At the famed Las Vegas Night Club,
Smalls would always spin Hip Hop, House and Reggae. As a self taught DJ,
Smalls learned on his own to spin and it wasn't long before he started
experimenting with other types of music, particularly Latin and Reggaeton.
Now, he can rock all types of music as you would experience with Smalls in
the mix. "This is a gift from God," says Smalls, & it's as if it was born with me.
Having spun at venues like China Club, Jimmy's, and Copa, Smalls is no
stranger to large crowds and never knowing just who is listening to him
spin. Jimmy's Bronx Café became the spot where a program director of an up
and coming radio station, 107.1, heard him spin. Shortly thereafter, Smalls
was offered his very own spot every Friday and Saturday night from 10
pm-1am. More than just the opportunity of a lifetime, this was a dream come
true for Smalls. That wouldn't be the only radio station Smalls skills would
be experienced. China Club was the home of Mega 97.9's live transmissions on
Friday nights where Smalls tore it up for those at the club and those
listening to New York's ..1 Latin Station. His talents have not only been
heard on New York's major radio stations, but on Demember 2004 Smalls added
another accomplishment to the list by being a Guest DJ on one of BET's
(Black Entertainment Television) most viewed shows, Rap City. The who's who
of the Hip-Hop industry have appeared on the show, artists such as Jay Z,
Nas, and 50 Cent to name a few. In addition to having the honor of DJing on
the show, Smalls was one of the final DJ's to appear on the Original set of
the Basement with Big Tigger being the host. Smalls did his thing for
thousand of viewers on the small screen, and fulfilled another of his life
long dreams. The legendary Copa has long been known as New York City's premier night
club. It has housed all types of genres including Hip Hop, where Smalls spun
for some it's biggest Hip Hop's parties which included N.O.R.E,, Ashanti,
Styles P, Joe Budden, and Lumidee (of Uh, Oh fame) just to name a few. Not
just an NYC DJ, Smalls has lit up the P.A. scene as well as Miamis Barcode
and club Krave.
Smalls' goal is to be one of the top producers in the Latin and hip hop
genres. He has already produced House music tracks for Latin Hip Hop artist
Lisa M. Smalls makes an appearance on NYC Sex, a steamy Reggaeton
compilation that was released this past summer. Constantly spinning at
clubs, Smalls is also creating Party Records, compiling some of the hottest
hits for people to hit the dance floor with. After all, this is what he does
best.
Having spun for a crowd of 10,000 in Rochester, on a weekly basis he makes
about three to five thousand people rock their bodies, not that difficult
since Copa can house up to 4500 people. There is no doubt that Smalls will
accomplish all his goals and become a legend of his time.
