I got started in this business after being discovered in the audience at a local play. I signed on as an understudy and soon after was on the road. Luckily, I was no stranger to touring. At age 10, and a preachers son, I knew I wanted to be a singer. My mom was a friend and fan of Shirley Caesar, so I got to watch her perform and hang out backstage in the dressing rooms. After high school, I packed up and moved to North Carolina. I became one of the Caesar singers and started singing and going on the road. I traveled all over the US, selling records, doing anything. I just wanted to be in the vibe. This gave me the opportunity to work with noted producers such as DeVante Swing, Gordon Champers and the producing duo The Characters Troy Taylor and Charles Farrar.
I like to feel I put the R in romance for the ladies. Likewise, I feel men should set the atmosphere for the ladies. We should get them flowers and candy and cook dinner, not everyday, but enough to make them feel special. Don't believe me? I prove it in my seductive ballad, Atmosphere. Striking a chord with my fans, it immediately found a home on the Billboard Monitor chart.
My new album, Medicine Music (Kedar Entertainment Group), reinvigorates R&B with heartfelt emotion and features powerhouse producers Eric Hudson (Omarion, 50 Cent), Gerald Isaacs (Mary J. Blige, Mario) and the Trackheadz (Will Smith).
Of course I had to flip it on Selfish (written by Eric Hudson) and Make A Scene (by Isaacs). On Make A Scene I couldn't resist giving a shout out to the ghetto fabulous ladies keeping it ghetto while rockin stilettos. Then, on Sooner Or Later, I recorded a beautiful duet with my labelmate Algebra (produced by the Trackheadz), where we harmonize about the delicate dance of falling in love.
As an actor, I've had the opportunity to appear in hit stage plays like Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman and T.D. Jakes' Behind Closed Doors, but ultimately decided to take my act to the airwaves with my soulful brand of R&B. Believe it or not, in between singing and acting I actually found time to receive a Bachelors degree in Theology from Vision Christian Bible College in Orlando, FL. My spiritual roots come across in the gospel tinged Emergency. So, there is definitely something on this album for everyone.
I believe you speak things into existence, so you have to speak positive, because you call things out of the atmosphere to you. Hopefully, with God's assistance, I've called success out of the atmosphere.Enjoy!
