About Me

When I was a young lad, I used to sit on the couch with my dad and harmonize. He would sing a note and then tell me to match it. And then, he would sing harmony around the note that I was holding. It was a very formative time in my life, and those experiences helped bring me to a place where, by the age of four, I had learned the lyrics to all four verses of the hymn "O for a Thousand Tongues." Since that time, I have been a dedicated choir member and church band leader. The music I play is primarily written in the key of G; however, I do like to experiment with E and C, sometimes A and D, and when I am in a somber mood, E minor.I have considered learning how to play the piano, but it doesn't impress the ladies like the guitar does. Elvis played a guitar, and I can't imagine him shaking his hips at a keyboard. My latest musical hero is Johnny Cash because of the media attention that he has recieved lately. If it wern't for the movie, I probably wouldn't even have known that he was from Tennessee, the homeland. I also have roots in Tennessee, and I feel that JCash and I are much closer because of that fact, my musical skills somehow connected to his by a mysterious geographical bond. My grandmother Suzanne thinks that I am very talented and praises me. I think she is just being nice like a grandma should, and, yet, I believe her to some degree, but I'm not letting it go to my head.I just got a new job working as a Substitute Teacher for Long Beach Unified School District. You would think that I would try and branch out, but this city is all I know, and I spent so many years learning how to beat the system that I think that have a pretty good understanding of how to make a difference in the lives of students.Sometimes, I come off as kind of a flake--I went to school at Flakewood High, I'm blonde, I'm layed back. But the truth is that I have so many superficial relationships that I am plulled every which way and that, and sometimes it's difficult to decide whether or not I should go to one party or three on a Friday night. It's not that I am proud of the fact, but sometimes my guy friends make fun of me because they know that I am a threat to their coolness. I'm ok with it. My mom always said that people make fun of others when they themselves are insecure. But, I have my insecurities too. Like the fear that I will not make enough money to pay off my college loans, the fear that I will marry the wrong person, the fear that someone will steal my helmet, the fear that the smell in the bathroom wont go away, and the fear that my scooter will get knocked over by my neighbor's stepdaughter while she backs up his giant truck on streetsweeper day. But I really don't fear that last one too much. It's always easier to create an image of yourself when making a first impression as compared to pulling one over on you family or long-term friends. But, the best situation for image enhancement isn't a breast enlargement, it's the act of meeting a long time friend who didn't know that I, over the course of the last ten years, had risen to the throne to reign as King Kaleidoscope Coordinator, peering out over the city from the thrid floor of my ivory tower, colaborating, planning, coordinating, motivating, leading, and inspiring today's generation of college club members and snowcone salesmen. It's a real honor to have been given such an exciting place in this crazy world, and it's good to know that God is behind me every step of the way.
