About Me

"...somewhere between Industrial, Metal, Ambient, and Punk", balbulus was initially a solo project for guitarist John Wood that was extended to a band in 2004. Following the band's break up in early 2008, balbulus has for the time being reverted to a solo project
Duality and paradox are recurrent themes of the balbulus universe. Aspects of traditional culture are juxtaposed with elements of post-modern abstraction. Modern digital technology is coupled with deliberately basic recording and gigging setups.

Influences: Influences are many and varied; I listen to quite a range of obscure, underground music, from Black Metal to traditional Folk music, to abstract Electronica and Post-Rock.
Here's a list of bands and artists who have influenced us (some more noticeably than others)...

CROW / NINE (uk), SWANS, NEUROSIS, GODFLESH, BURZUM, KILLING JOKE, early CATHEDRAL, MIKE OLDFIELD, HAWKWIND, AUTECHRE, APHEX TWIN, SEEFEEL, CERECLOTH, DIANOGAH, MOGWAI, DRUDKH, HATE FOREST, SKYFORGER, ULVER, DARKTHRONE, JESUS FIX, JOY DIVISION / early NEW ORDER, BLACK SABBATH, SHELLAC, NOXAGT, GARMARNA, BLOWZABELLA, ARTY McGLYNN, 5IVE (not the boy band!), SLEEP, HIGH ON FIRE, NILS OKLAND, PHILIP GLASS, ARVO PART, STYLUS, MAGNETOPHONE, OPETH, DEATH, CARCASS, PESTILENCE, CADAVER, CELTIC FROST, ANATHEMA, 3RD AND THE MORTAL, SKYCLAD, OZRIC TENTACLES, SURGERY WITHOUT RESEARCH, NANCY'S PLACE, JACOB'S LADDER, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN, THROBBING GRISTLE, AMEBIX...
Sounds Like: Either:

a melting pot of different influences, from Black Metal to traditional Folk, to abstract Electronica and Post-Rock,

Or:

a cross-section through Johns CD collection...

You decide.

Over the past few years, I have had a few people ask the inevitable question: "What does BALBULUS mean?". In an effort to remain cryptic and mysterious, I have tended to reply "Work it out for yoursel...
