Whether he is giving inspiring discourses at youth camps, showcasing his vocal performing abilities on TV, or appearing in movies on the Disney channel, Darin Southam is a captivating venue. A native Washingtonian, he grew up in the wet, but beautiful northwest. It was there that he developed his love for music and movies in his early years. Since it was always raining, we always went to the movies. Darin developed a love for motion picture scores and began to collect them. I would listen to the music and learn to play it by ear. Recognizing his musical nature, Darins parents put him in piano lessons, but after one week he got so frustrated playing Mary Had A Little Lamb that he didnt want to continue. The songs I had learned to play by ear were so much more difficult then what my teacher was giving me that I lost interest. Darin still does not read music straight from the page, which makes his songwriting all the more impressive and moving. He is a natural poet, writing his first poem at age 12, and it shows in his lyrics. In his home office is a digital recording piano where he records and then memorizes how to play his songs and melodies. It was no coincidence, when Darin met up with film composer, Jay Richards, that they made a great match as co-producers of Darins debut, self titled album. I would record my melodies and write the lyrics of my songs. Then I would rush to Jays so he could write the notes down for me. Darins songwriting and voice with Jays beautiful orchestra arrangements combine to make this album entrancing.
Music and acting run in Darins family. His mother, lead singer of The Contessas produced by Motown and Jimmy Webb in the mid 60s, performed in The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, and Pajama Game in The Civic Light Opera of California, as well as appeared in national TV shows, Shivary, Shebang, and Ninth Street West. My dad was just a straight-tone melody guy, so I know I didnt get it from him! asserts Southam, but whether in the family or not, Darin has proven his abilities in front of the mike and on the screen. It is no wonder he is referred to as Mr. Captivating.
His new album was released in stores in August of 2005, being sold at any Deseret Book , Seagull Book, Media Play and eventually Walmart and Target, etc. With sacred classical, "Pie Jesu (Latin: Merciful Jesus)" and Darin's "Me Puedes Amar (Spanish: You Can Love Me)," his album features 3 languages of delivery. Southam has a beautiful, crystal clear voice that is pleasant and easy to listen to, but best of all, this album never gets old. Darin's listeners constantly attest that they can't get enough - like this California fan, "I have listened to this CD about 100 times and I can't get enough of it. Darin's voice is so lovely and mellow, it simply melts my senses." Deseret Morning News asserts, Southam's debut album is impressive definitely compete(s) with the big dogs. A singer, an actor, a writer, public speaker, and an artist, you may ask as I did what doesnt he do to which he freely replies blind dates, and although he is frequently cast as the bad boy, out of the movies Darin Southam is a very kind and approachable guy next door. He is a person you would actually want your teenagers to know about.
