BIOGRAPHYBorn in Charlotte, North Carolina, Shonka Dukureh is one of the most versatile, innovative, risk taking artists of the day. Her mix of soul, jazz, blues, and gospel, results in a well balanced experience for her listeners. After graduating from Fisk University with a B.A. in Theater, Shonka found that her vocal talents, coupled with her innate sense of the dramatic, were well suited to a performing arts career. The Tennessean (Nashville, TN) agreed and awarded her their Best Actress in a Musical award for her performance in a local production of American Duet written by Marcus Hummon. Dukureh’s performing credits include, Black Nativity (Ensemble), Jar The Floor (MaDear), Gospel At Colonus (Ensemble), God's Trombone(Judgement Day/Go Down Moses), Before It Hit's Home, Smokey Joe’s Café (B.J.), Dreamgirls(Effie), A Raisin in the Sun(Mama), Once On This Island (PaPa Gay), Ain't MisBehaven(Nell, and most recently Respect, The Musical Journey of Women (Principal). Her work with Respect not only earned her professional actor’s status with the Actor’s Equity Association, but she was also nominated for Detroit’s Wilde Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Shonka currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee where she tours with two critically acclaimed productions The Princely Players: On Our Way to Glory, and Freedom Sings, a multimedia presentation of the First Amendment. She’s expected to release her first Gospel CD in the Spring of 2009.
