I am 5'8", 175 pounds. I used to be a drug-free competitive bodybuilder but now I race my bike for Team Type 1 or TT1. My team is comprised mostly of type 1 diabetics and we are trying to educate people on the fact that diabetic athletes can compete at the same level as healthy athletes. We are in our first year as a continental pro team, but also have a developmental team, of which I am part of, and a triathlon team. We are also looking to start a track cycling team after our newly formed triathlon team is all set up and running smoothly. Most of the developmental team, me and several others excluded, will compete in the team competition in the Race Across America, or RAAM
for short. The team has previously competed in the 2006 and 2007 RAAM. In 2006 the riders set a new RAAM record for crossing the nation in the shortest amount of time and in 2007 they broke their own record. As for me, I've only been racing my bike on the velodrome since 2007 and I'm a much better track cyclist than road cyclist so that is my new found passion. In the 2007 Paralympic Track Cycling Nationals I won the bronze medal in the kilo TT on the 7-11 velodrome in Colorado Springs less than three months after first getting on the velodrome. In addition to being a type 1 diabetic I also lost my arm above the elbow in a car accident in '93, but it has not slowed me down one bit! I value my body because it is the most valuable thing I have and if it is not taken care of, it breaks down before it it is taken away and then I'll have nothing.
